Projected Draftees

Featured Replies

According to Baseball America, Kentucky has three high school players projected to get drafted. Ben Revere, OF, Lexington Catholic is projected at #135. That's a top 5 rounder.

James Caldwell C/OF, Also Lexington Catholic and Gabriel Shaw RHP, St Marys in Paducah are also projected but they only number the top 200 prospects.

There are seven others from Kentucky, but they are all College guys. The only other top 200 is Trystan Magnuson, Closer for Louisville ranked #199.

What about Ijames or Witten?

Isn't it "Wes?"

1) It is Wes, but I have seen him listed as both.

2) At this point, there are so many lists that one can't take them seriously beyond Revere being #1.

Being draftable and being drafted are two different things. A kid who might be draftable might not be drafted because he or his family have said that the kid is definitely going to school. Plus, with the end of the draft and follow rule, teams aren't going to use their later draft picks on JUCO players that they want to watch, because if they can't sign them, they aren't going to waste a high pick on them. Some teams are even going to surrender their later round picks, because of that rule change.

There is another possibility ... James Jones, a RHP at Ballard Memorial. He has signed with John A. Logan, a traditional juco power, and is considered a prospect with a big upside. Several teams were still scouting him late in the spring.

All good points. That scenario was true with Clint Tilford of Heath last spring. Tilford had signed with Kentucky and had made it clear it would take a sizable signing bonus to keep him from enrolling there. He wasn't drafted and just finished his freshman year at UK.

Jones is an outstanding player that I think sometimes goes unnoticed. He was throwing in the low 90s this season.

I haven't seen Jones on any of the prospect lists from Baseball America or Perfect Game, but that doesn't mean he isn't getting some notice. Going to a JUCO (and Logan is a good one, that has produced other guys who got drafted) will mean he's eligible to be drafted again next year, and someone might be advising him that he can do better after he shows how he can pitch in college ball first.
