For those that don't know much about the Boyd County area, it's a VERY religous rural area that is attempting to become wet.

I believe the voting was to take place today on the issue of making Boyd County wet. I for one am all for it. Hear me out, I'm a 22 year old who likes his beer as much as the next but my reasoning for wanting Boyd to become a wet county has nothing to do with alcohol. I don't mind driving to Ashland or Kenova to get my adult beverages, I would just like to be able to get a nice meal at a nice restaurant without having to drive to Ashland or Huntington. I would love to have some establishments here in Boyd such as Outback, Applebees and other places rather than having to chose between what fast food joint to eat. Those places won't do business in these parts without selling some drinks.

I think that some of the conservatives in our area are scared that a bar, liquor store and strip club are going to show up on every corner of our area.

I'd love to hear what some of the locals in this area think about this.

I'd also like to hear from some that know more about the process of all this. Is there a situation that Boyd could have restaurants that serve alcohol but not have carryouts, bars and such ?

Even if you arent from the area, feel free to comment.

The law, if passed, would only allow restaurants that seat 100 people and derive 70% of its profits from food sales to sale alcohol. Supposaly, this law will not allow bars and/or carryouts.

I had heard that. I don't care about the alcohol, I'm all about the food !

So let me ask this:

If the law allows only restaurants to serve and won't allow bars or carryouts, why would the locals have such a problem with it ? Surely people are not that offended by seeing someone of age have a beer with his dinner...

Is Greenup County wet?

No. And I would venture to say it will never be, in our life time. Greenup Co. is more of a bed room community (the way I like it) there is not any large cities in Greenup Co. no malls, not many restaurants, other than fast food. Most people that live in Greenup Co. work elsewhere. There are seven cities in Greenup Co. and all are small cities with minimal business districts.

Many, and justifiably so, do not know the constitutionality of only allowing limited sales of alcohol. The state government has not been able to say what it would take to open a carryout. Would it just take an application, or would it have to be put back on the ballot? As for strip clubs and bars, I would guess that many are scared of the fact that I64 runs through Boyd Co. and would be a prime location for such an establishment.

The big problem with the wet/dry vote is, even thought most people are registered Democrats, many people in Boyd Co. are conservative and don't want alcohol sold close to their home. Ashland is a decent sized city, but Boyd Co. is more of a neighborhood community. The City of Ashland already has wet districts, which allows alcohol sales at restaurants that derive a percentage of it's money from food sales, and carryouts. I have heard many people say that Ashland being wet is enough for Boyd Co.

This came to a head because of a mall in Boyd Co. that is having trouble surviving, due to lack of interest from possible retailers. Mall management believes that by bringing in bigger restaurants it can boost its revenue. Maybe, I am not sure either way.

Disclaimer: I do not live in Boyd Co. but I work in Boyd Co. and have many friends and co-workers who live in Boyd Co. and the above is what I hear from them. The above statements are not meant to voice the opinion of the Boyd Co. voting body and is not necessarily the opinions of the writer, and should only be used to answer the question posed to me to the best of my knowledge.

As of right now the referendum for the sales of alcohol is: roughly 2000 for and 800 against.

Where did you hear that Ram ?

Was today the only day on voting for this ?

After watching a movie Saturday in the fantastic new theater I thought to myself how nice it would be to go a nice sit down dining establishment afterwards that isn't a buffet or a Bob Evans. But that would have required going back into downtown Ashland or hitting the Interstate for Huntington. Hopefully, this changes things.

And if you have not been to the new theater yet you need to go. It's even nicer than Pullman Square, which I didn't think was possible. I would LOVE to have one of those theater seats in my living room! :D

I thought the same thing saturday when I went to see a movie there. Yes, those seats are awesome. It's a very nice theater.

I did notice they only had 5 movies showing ? Isnt it supposed to be a 10 screen theater or did I hear wrong ?

For the grand opening they had Shrek showing on 4 screens and Spiderman showing on 3 screens. Or something like that.

I live in Greenup County, but work in Boyd. My coworkers and I look forward to our lunch more than anything! I am excited about getting some new restaurants to eat at. I really hope they don't try to appeal the decision. I think that the voters let their voices be heard and that should be enough!

I'm going to the new theater this weekend and you guys have got me pumped about the seats!!
