bluebird mom Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Just got word that today's game is cancelled due to field conditions.
DMZ76 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 ...I thought it might have been due to lack of interest. (LOL)
SEABASS Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I find it hard to believe with the lack of rain we've had and the amount we had overnight that they couldn't get that field ready. I think it is pure laziness upon the grounds keeper.

cch5432 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Good thing I didn't go all the way over to Fort Thomas before finding out......
OldRaider22 Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Problem is that because we haven't had much rain the ground is very, very hard. As a result all you get is runoff instead of it really soaking in. I'm sure they did their best to get it ready....... What would you rather have: A game of this magnitude that possibly could be decided because of sloppy field conditions OR wait and play another day> I'm sure both teams welcome the rest anyhow, wasn't/isn't HHS very close to the game limit as well?

I think it is pure laziness upon the grounds keeper. I hate to say this but I have to agree. I called CovCath at 2pm to see if the game was still on and at that time it was (I was told later that HHS didn't call the game off until 2:30). Because I thought the game was still on, I drove over to HHS to watch the game. As I got close to the field I realized that the game had to be called off do to the lack of cars parked as I got closer and closer to the ball field. My comment about agreeing with the above, was because I saw the large amount of water still laying all around the infield. Sorry, with that amount of water still laying on the field at 4:30pm, there is no way anyone tried raking the field early in the morning to get it into playing shape.... BTW, CovCath JV played Cov Holy Cross JV at CovCath and the field was bone dry...
Theoldguy Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 CovCath did over Cov Holy Cross in nine inings 6-5.

I went by a few times and never saw anyone except the city workers working on other projects. Was told that the person that takes care of the fields for the high school was picking up trash, sweeping floors, and emptying garbage cans at the high school. Just when you thought your program was going in the right direction,(don't get me wrong, it is) you get this. I bet if it was a city little league game, that crew of 4 or 5 city workers would have gotten it ready.

No wonder people get feed up and drop participating in trying to do things right.

Qryche11 Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 I am surprised they didnt have parents/players working on the field to get it ready. Not that it is required but I have seen parents/coaches/players for knothole teams working for 3 hours on a Saturday morning getting fields ready for games. This would have been a great game. Maybe the pitchers needed some rest.
cooperstown Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Who is it that maintains/pays for the field at Highlands Park? Whoever it is should look into this new product recently developed that might help improve the quality of their infield - it's called grass seed. The field could be quite nice, but the infield is atrocious.
