These words were uttered by an ump during the Leslie County and Knott Central game last night. Leslie is winning the game 11-3 in the bottom of the 6th. Pitcher makes his pitch and the ball hits the dirt and then hits the batter in the foot. He calls dead ball and awards the batter 1st base. I'm standing right there and I say the ball hit the dirt first, as was a few others. He turns around. looks at the scoreboard, and says, "It doesn't matter". That upset me to no end. I asked him, "What do you mean it doesn't matter? Tell me why it doesn't." Then my wife shut me up, which was a good thing.:D

Anyway, That batter ends up scoring, making the score 12-3. Now, what happens if Knott, in the top of the 7th, scores 8 runs? Without that batter scoring, it could have been 11-11. I know that the chances of that are miniscule, but it could have happened. In no way, ever, should an umpire feel that it doesn't matter, when it does to those players on the field. Why take it out of their hands?

While I certainly wasn't there I feel pretty stronly that you may have misinterpretted what the ump was trying to say. I feel very confident that what he was trying to convey was that doesn't matter if the ball hit the dirt first, that when it hit the batter it is still a hit batsman. Lots of people think otherwise and that appears to me to be what he was explaining, albeit obviously somewhat poorly.

I think what he meant, was it "doesn't matter if the ball hits the dirt first" and then the batter, because it's still a HBP.

Beat me to the punch again S3

So, the ball can hit the dirt and still hit the batter and be HBP? I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up. :thumb:

I've never seen that called. And I have witnessed that a few times, but never called.

What really got me was the fact that he looked at the scoreboard, then turned and said that. If he would have simply said the ball hit him, I, probably had been done with it.

The thing that obviously got you, because of the thread title, was when he said, "It Doesn't Matter", in which case he was right, so what's the big deal?

I was watching the Paris vs Model game last week when in the bottom of the 7th Model was up 13-5-Paris won 14-13 when everything seemed to gel. It always matters.

No big deal. It's over and done with.

The best thing for all parents to do that attend their childrens games and it doesn't matter what sport, is to learn the rules before opening the mouth. If we only knew how bad some of our comments were when it comes to an umpire/refs call, we would never yell about a call made, IMO!

I've been around baseball a long time. And this is one rule that I did not know about. I've seen it happen a bunch of times and this was the 1st time that I have ever witnessed it being called a HBP. All the other times the ump just called a ball.

And, this is the first time I've been wrong and said something about it. :thumb:

And... in my 3rd post in this thread, I stated that the ump looked at the scoreboard before looking directly at me. Either way, it was a mistake.

Maybe he was looking to see how many more innings he had left for you to keep yelling at him. :D
