I would hope that GC would take their time (sounds as if they may do just that) and hire someone with a solid background and broad shoulders. I hope for their sake that they get a quality guy to run the program.

This is amazing...

The first paragraph says it all:

"The Kentucky High School Athletic Association has placed the Greenup County boys’ basketball program on two years probation and levied other penalties against the school as a result of alleged recruiting violations by former boys’ basketball coach Jim Hicks."

I don't have a dog in this fight, and I don't know Coach Hicks all that well, but I do know his attorney very well, and know him to be a quality person.

The fact that the KHSAA has levied punishment based upon "allegations" without ever actually interviewing Hicks in the process is mind-boggling. I don't see this as a very good way to encourage schools to police themselves.

Not only that but according to the article, the school district did their own investigation and attempted to clean house on their end. Isn't that good enough???

"KHSAA Commissioner Brigid DeVries complimented Greenup County Schools’ Superintendent John Younce for the school’s internal investigation — conducted by Corbin attorney Timothy Crawford — but indicated the violations were too severe to go unpunished.

“The KHSAA appreciates and takes into consideration that Greenup County Schools took the initiative to thoroughly investigate and report the violations to the KHSAA, as well as demonstrated that violations will not be tolerated,” DeVries wrote in a letter dated April 4. “Nonetheless, the KHSAA has the responsibility and authority to impose penalties against a high school independent of those taken by the school system itself.”"

If you are familiar with how the KHSAA works in these matters, you know that the accused party is treated as guilty until proven innocent. Also, the burden appears from my experience to require that you prove your innocence beyond a reasonable doubt and that, in fact, that may well not be sufficient.

KHSAA convicts where a court of law, with the same evidence, would summarily dismiss charges. That, to me, is one of several reasons why injured parties should be more willing to take their cases to court.

Coach Hicks is well represented and, to use a favorite expression of some, the Greenup Circuit Court will provide that "magical" level playing field.

I must concur with Scooterbob on this one. I think he is correct as to how the KHSAA operates. While I do not know Coach Hicks personally, I have heard a number of people speak well of him.

I do know the attorney representing Coach Hicks and I don't think he would become involved in this case unless he believed his client to be telling the truth. I wonder if Coach Hicks has really done anything different or worse than the vast majority of the other coaches ?

What exactly is the penalty for being placed on "probation" by the KHSAA? Are they ineligible for post season play during this time? Does this effect all sports at GCHS? What bearing will this have on hiring a new basketball coach?

Generally, the Basketball program will be serving the probation but the entire Athletic Department, will be scrutinized, if any further violations occur, during the time period.

Not clear, on the KHSAA penalties, toward post-season participation.

Post season play is what I questioned? I know that they have a very good basketball program and they are competitive each year. I wonder how it will affect it.
