March 22, 200719 yr We have discussed this before. Crean was gone by the time MSU's latest final four team made a run. If you want 1st round losses in the NCAA's Crean is your man with 3 in 5 trips to the NCAA's and 2 in 3 trips to the NIT... I just disagree that Crean is a great recruiter. The great recruits that MSU got Cleaves, Peterson, Bell, Richardson, Ager, Davis, etc. were all Michigan guys that were going to MSU because they lived in the state. Beside Dwayne Wade, there are not many high profile recruits that Crean has gotten(can you name some for me???). I know it is tough to recruit to Marquette. Even when Crean was at MSU, those guys were going to MSU more because they were Michigan kids IMO. I have always heard Crean was the lead recruiter of all the kids from Flint. I know he lead on Cleaves and Peterson and they delivered a title. James has been a pretty high level player now right? Novak and Diener were very good players. I think he's a guy entering his prime and he's a very good evaluator of talent that works hard and has his team work harder. But you do have a valid point. He hasn't delivered much in March and that's not going to cut it at UK...

I agree with you and I am sure that he was very much involved in recruiting those Flint guys and the other Michigan kids, but just not sure how hard you would have to press guys like that to stay at home(especially the Flint kids, although if you have been to Flint, you would probably want to go far away from home:D ). I would be more impressed if those guys had been from Miami or Dallas, and he had gotten them to come to MSU. Novak and Diener type players are not going to cut it at UK(although I realize that recruiting to Marquette and UK are apples and oranges). March is the key, and it is going to take a proven winner to cut the mustard. Tubby never lost a first round game in March and he is gone...

Because he hasn't been able to win a title at a basketball tradition rich school like Marquette? Crean would not be my first choice, or even my 2nd....But he'd definitely be qualified for the job and in most big-time programs top five. Curious, who would you want to be the coach?....Let me guess, Billy D?
March 23, 200719 yr I would like to see Gonzagas coach come to UK. Mark Few is a great coach and would make a good one for UK. He always gets the most out of his players IMO.

March 23, 200719 yr Is he really a good coach? Many on here (and around the Country) believe that Tom Crean is one of America's great up and coming coaches. I am 99% sure that Gametime was among the first locally to start the Tom Crean Fan Club. I've also heard many say that when Tubby's last day comes and goes, they hope Crean takes over. All of that being said, is he actually a good coach or a guy that rode a great player to one good run? 2000 Season -- NIT 2001 Season -- No post-season 2002 Season -- As a #5 seed lost to #12 seed Tulsa 2003 Season -- the Dwyane Wade year. 2004 Season -- NIT 2005 Season -- NIT 2006 Season -- As a #7 seed lost to #10 seed Alabama 2007 Season -- As a #8 seed lost to #9 seed Michigan St. 8 Years, one great year with a great player, outside of that never won another NCAA game and lost to a lower seed every time. Great coach? Thoughts and opinions? And Crean did this in C-USA and the Big East. THIS is what some Kentucky fans are clamoring for??

March 23, 200719 yr I have been hearing at the Sweet Sixteen all day that he is the favorite. I really hope this isn't true. TC has had one run in the NCAA tournament with Dwayne Wade. That isn't enough to land UK's job IMO.....

So many Tubby fans have blinders on and cannot realize there are many good coaches out there who are not named Orlando Tubby Smith. Im not saying it should be Crean, but he recruits, develops, gets the most from his players, and plays an exciting brand of basketball. He has shaped Marquette of all places into a BEAST contender, so why can he not be a good fit at Kentucky?

March 23, 200719 yr Post #23 I'm not saying Crean should get the job because I obviously think others are more qualified. I was just defending the critiscm he was getting. Obviously you are not going to be in the Elite 8 every year if your at.........Marquette. But all I am saying is where was Marquette at before he got there? Now they are competiting for the BEAST crown.
