Wojciechowski: UK's Smith should leave before he's fired

Featured Replies

Irrational expectations by the fans. In this day and age of college basketball parity, the dynasties are over. The days of teams making 4-5 consecutive final fours are over. Yet, Kentucky fans unrealisically think there should be a banner ceremoney in Rupp every April. Tubby has averaged 26 wins a year since coming to UK. 26 wins a year. The longest streak of not getting bounced in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in the nation. Kansas just won one for the first time in three years. There hasn't been any national columns on Self needing to quit. Duke jjust got bounced in the first round. Is their athletic director going to issue a statement in response to the fan base? I think not.

Parity is among us. The same thing happened in baseball with the Yankees, in football with the Cowboys and in the NBA with the Celtics. It's time to accept the fact a national title every year isn't a realistic goal.

Preach on Fletch!

Although the talk I saw by some of the talking heads was that if Self didn't win at least 1 game in the tourney this year, his job could be in jeopardy. The NCAA tourney is the ultimate report card. And among active coaches, Tubby is #5 (I think Coach K is #1 and Rick is #2) in NCAA winning percentage.

I've also never seen a scenario where other coaches from around the nation are publicly coming to Tubby's side in the matter. They usually don't say too much (see Bob Knight, Steve Lavin, and Mike Davis).

CHICAGO -- Fire Tubby Smith?

How do you deep-six a guy who won you a national championship, who wins nearly eight of out 10 games he coaches, who gets rave reviews from his peers? How do you stick a buyout fork in a distinguished 10-year Kentucky career that has lasted longer than beloved (pre-Louisville, of course) Rick Pitino's tenure in Lexington and includes exactly zero NCAA penalties?

You don't. You can't … except at Kentucky, where, said Wildcats junior guard Joe Crawford, "people expect us to be in the Final Four every year."

Those expectations, no longer realistic in an age of Winthrops and George Masons, is why Smith should think long and hard about a change in hoops venue. That's right: He should think about walking away from Kentucky before Kentucky walks away from him.

He won't, of course. He can't. To resign at season's end would be, in the Tubby universe, the same as admitting defeat. He would be giving in to the growing number of vocal critics who ask -- no, demand -- why the winningest program in the history of Division I basketball can do no better than a No. 8 seed (for the second consecutive season) and a 67-58 grinder win against a flawed Villanova team Friday evening in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

If you know anything about Smith, you know he is genetically incapable of signing that sort of resignation letter. Pride, stubborness and a will as strong as a steel I-beam are part of his personality DNA. They'll have to fire him first. And if his program doesn't start producing some signature wins and a few more rafter banners, they just might.

Exactly....It's a rarity in the fraternity of coaches that you can't find one to badmouth, or criticize a coach, but Tubby is one that all coaches admire and respect. :thumb:

I think they also realize how illogical the UK fan base is being also. :thumb:

Final Four apperances in 5 consecutive years may be irrational. May I ask, would beating a ranked opponent (ranked when UK plays them) more often than every 45 or 50 games be irrational? Would asking for a decent winning streak at Rupp be asking too much? Would asking our coach (Tubby) to take some responsibility for losses be asking too much? How about our couch being a little less arogant and stop the list of excuses...Too much??

Tubby arogant??? That's the first I've ever heard of that....

When's the last time you heard Tubby say something like, I've got to do better, or that was on me, or I'll take responsibility for that loss? He always has someone (usually a freshman) to blame.

Ok then, he's 1 for his last 23. I don't care how much you love Tubby, if you're honest, you will admit he has all kinds of excuses...99% of the time, he had nothing to do with the mistakes made in a game. A bit arogant if you ask me.

Not really....Saying we didn't execute or that we missed some open shots isn't being arrogant, it's being honest.
