Does anyone know who the leading candidates are for this vacancy? Will the coaching replacement effect VanHoose's decision to go there? Does the new coaching staff have to honor the scholarship - regardless of injury?

It's not a real glamorous job. I'd be willing to bet that they have one of the lower enrollments in all of D1. Roberts Stadium is OK, but their on campus facilities are no better (or even worse) than many high schools in the area.

 

Jim Crews had some success in their former conference (MCC, I think)) but they have never really been a good fit IMO in the Missouri Valley. All of their glory days are at the D2 level. Although it has almost been 30 years, in some ways that program has never recovered from the crash.

Vanhoose is already signed, so Evansville would have to release him from the letter of intent to make him available to another NCAA college. He could decide to go the junior college or prep school route if something falls through with Evansville.

I really think that they would be better suited for d2. The school is smaller than some high schools. Take a look at the enrollments at the Missouri Valley schools and I think you will see that they just won't realistically be able to provide the resources to compete at this level IMO.

Marty Simmons, current coach at SIU-Edwardsville (d2 school) is the leadng front runner for the job. A former player and assist. at the school

I think Vanhoose should come to Morehead State.

Simmons ... good guy, good coach. He's a semi-local guy, a former Illinois Mr. Basketball (at Lawrenceville, also the hometown of Jay Shidler).

 

Simmons originally signed at Indiana, then transferred to Evansville and had a good career there. I'm guessing he would be a guy that would excite the fan base.
