Yes. That is not the problem. The problem is that the people who have held power in the region throughout history have been the most radically minded. The Quran DEFINATELY uses language that allows for the continuance of militarist domination. It can be used as a tool to radicalize the masses towards a path of welcomed death. In short, its teachings to lead towards a path that sways far from peace. We must pursue OUR interest in the area, not the interest of those that would like to see the establishment of a muslim based military and economic superpower in the middle east. It is not that there is NO WAY its teachings will allow for peace, it is that there is NO WAY that the radical leadership in the area will allow for peace.

 

The same could be said of the Bible, Ram.

 

We can't pursue our interests in that region until there is stability there.

 

There won't be stability there until there is some sort of compromise and peace.

 

It is in the best interests of everyone to help the region learn to deal with their differences in a mutually beneficial manner.

I beg to differ, we have and still can pursue our interest in the region without their being compromise and peace. We have gotten the Saudi government in our pockets through thier huge investments in our markets. Current leadership in Iran would like to see the Saudi royal family put to death as traitors to their people and religeon for this type of interaction with the U.S. This type of mentality doesn't lend itself to peaceful coexistance with the United States.

I'm not saying I believe we can actually establish Democracy. I'm saying that I believe we can assist in the establishment of a peaceful co-existence of varied "ocracies".

Rockmom, there is no disrespect intended when I make this statement, but you need to further study the history of the Muslim people and their religeon. It is a society based on conversion and military triumph. Their sects have been fighting against one another since the last of the four rightly guided caliphs died, leaving a void in their religeous leadership. Peaceful solutions of compromise are not part of their history to the point that compromise is looked at as a source of weakness. Iran would love to help solve the problem. They are the most militant anti-U.S. government in the region. They would love to control Iraq's resources, creating a muslim superpower. This could create a nuclear superpower in the middle east that could create a shift in military and economic power globally. This is NOT in the United States interest.

 

Well, boys, you'd better be prepared to fire up the draft then. We've become entangled in something that could easily last 1000 years and our volunteer military cannot sustain the level of deployment required to beat down every Islamic hothead who chooses Iraq as a vacation spot. Make sure you tell all those soldiers and marines on their third or fourth deployment to forget about their families back home because this could take a while. Better get your checkbooks out while you're at it. Although we've skillfully deferred the costs for this adventure, at some point China and Japan will stop lending us money.
