Best Basketball Camps

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me what the best basketball camps are in this area? I have some very talented players and want them to get some great instruction and some exposure in the state. I receive lots of pamplets and flyers for camps, but I want to know which ones are worth the money.

Instruction and exposure don't usually happen at the same camp...

Instructional camps - Bomgartner's Shooting Camp in Indiana, Georgetown College and Transy both have individual improvement camps, most HS coaches have individual improvement camps - if yours doesn't, send them to Billy Hicks camp here in Scott Co. He does a great job teaching the fundamentals of ball handling.

Exposure Camps - there are invitational only camps like 5-Star, Nike, Adidas, etc. But there are also regional camps like "Blue Chip/High Potential Camp". Some kids go to the camps at the university they most want to attend. At UK some of the best campers scrimmage against UK players at night while the camp watches.

The High Potential camp will almost always find a school that will at least recruit you for junior varsity (NAIA) and you don't have to be invited, I think it's very cheap also. They send out a scouting report to many colleges throughout the country.

Georgetown College has a very good camp, but I'm a little biased since my nephew helps run it.:D

The High Exposure Blue Chip camp is the one at Georgetown. I've attended severa; times and the instruction is top notch for the price that is paid.

If your looking for a camp where you can compete with other kids around the state and still get good fundamentals then I would probably suggest the Bolus Camp or Transy/Georgetown/UK.

If you want a very good camp for individual instruction where there may only be 8-12 kids in the session and fundamentals and conditioning are stressed then I suggest Stan Kimbrough's workouts. He is the former Xavier star who played in the NBA. He puts the kids through grueling workouts and its 4 days from 9-3pm. There is no T-shirt at the end of the week or trophy, just a high five and a better player in your son or daughter. Yes, its for both boys and girls.

Son went to Blue Chip camp at Georgetown last year. Overall had a good experience and would do it again. He met a lot of other players as well. Can't tell yet how the exposure benefitted him yet, although he has received some early college interest (questionnaires). He was a bit disappointed at the final camp ranking system and selections for the "all-star" game. He felt there was a certain amount of favoritism towards certain players not necessarily based on merit or production in the camp tournament. I personally can't evaluate that part - just sharing a 15 year olds opinion.

When I worked at the KBA the Rick Mount shooting camp was outstanding. Your you are right on Hicks camps. He has kids from all over the state and the camp teaches strong fundamentals to kids.

Transy has always run a very good Instructional Camp.

Thanks for all of the information. I will look into some of these camps for my players. I received a brochure from Ten Star All Star basketball camp which is by invitation only. Have any coaches ever had any of their players apply for and attend this camp?

What are some of the best camps for 3rd-4th graders?
