Emily Queen becomes 16th Region all-time scoring leader

I don't feel the urge for any male bonding, but thanks Bubba for the mediating. :thumb:

Big Bubba is correct. I was agreeing with the analysis of dinoradja and and doing so by citing an example of a lesser event receiving a heightened coverage.

In the words of a great american citizen, an upstanding pillar of the greater Los Angeles community, "Cant we all just along"

"Good Call"

How sad.

Not sure what you mean...

How a thread honoring a great player turns into an indirect shot at another player's achievement.

Enough said by me.

Congratulations to Emily on all of your accomplishments!

It has been fun and exciting to watch you play these last four years. You will be greatly missed and we wish you continued success on the court and in all you do.

Sounds like it is time to close this thread and start over.

I don't think anyone intended to discount the publicity given to anyone else and this is particularly true in regard to VanHoose. Jonathan has earned any accolades which may come his way. He is undoubtedly the POY for this region and for this area. No one is close. He has earned a fine D-1 scholarship and that is a rarity around here.

I think that most were suggesting that Queen deserved a little better coverage than she has received locally. For example, the coverage of her signing with Middle Tennessee, the coverage given to Laura Terry when she signed with Louisville, or the coverage given to Jessica Fortman when she signed with Buffalo didn't remotely approached the coverage given to a local who recently signed with Georgetown College.

I would hate to think that the reason is because the three D-1 signees are female and the small college signee is a male. That would be troublesome, don't you think?

I could be wrong about this but I think that the schools call the paper about doing the spreads in the paper. This thread was started to say congratulations to Emily Queen for becoming the all-time girls scoring leader in the 16th region. Without missing a beat it turns into another thread about someone being mistreated in the coverage in the paper. How about this if you don't like what you read or don't see enough about your team start your own paper.

I doubt your idea will resolve the surfacing question concerning gender inequities. Personally, I like the Daily Independent and I really don't disagree with its general policy in sports coverage of having female sports take a back seat because the fact is that the overwhelming interest in sports is in male teams and male participants.

However, the trends in the law and in society (call it political correctness if you choose) are clearly in the direction of equality. Since "separate but equal" was stricken down in Brown, I don't think having a male oriented newspaper and a female oriented newspaper will do the job.

While I'm on my "equality soapbox", I'd like to mention the really ridiculous and degrading state of nicknames forced on female teams. Lady Red Devils, Lady Royals, Lady Vikings, Lady Musketeers, Lady Lions, Lady Generals, Lady Ramblers, Lady Fighting Irish, Lady Wildcats, and on and on. Of course, Ashland's girls are called the "Kittens". Does anyone think that is any better?

Our old firiend, Wireman, used to insinuate that, from time to time, other posters were "stirring the soup". Well, that is exactly what I am doing and I am doing so in an attempt to have others think about all of this and to respond- hopefully in a mature manner. After all, BGP is for discussion as well as whining and name-calling.

By the way, I am an overly and overtly conservative Republican so don't think this is from a wild-eyed leftwinger.

Back up the bus, pal. No one claimed to have been mistreated...at least not here. My tongue-in-cheek remark to ShooterX3 was exactly that...tongue-in-cheek...as I'm sure ShooterX3 readily recognized. The kids themselves would laugh about the matter...and do so. It's no big deal.

You treat this discussion as it if those under discussion and those participating don't know each other and would not quite normally shell out such give-and-take in person. That just isn't so and the kind of hypersensitivity that some have demonstrated is unwarranted, in my view.

As for the ADI, let me go on record as saying that it was I who apologized to them for not notifying them that the record would most likely be broken on a certain day which would have allowed them to send a reporter and photographer to the gym. They offered their own apologies, we agreed it was regrettable, a third party sent a picture, and the reporter wrote a fine article...end of story...except to have fun with the incredibly obvious difference between a 4-picture, two article spread and an article that was accompanied by a single picture.

No one has taken a shot or demeaned anyone, least of all a kid we all know and care for.
