On Friday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m., Covington Holy Cross (3-0) travels to play Holmes (0-3).  Last season, Holy Cross beat Holmes 48-0 at Thomas More University. How does this game go? Start the discussion.

I was told this is the first time in Holy Cross history that they have been 3-0 in back to back seasons. Congrats on the success!

The Indians should get an easy win this week. Then, after a bye week, they get what could be a challenge the next week when they travel to Eminence. Looking at the schedule, an undefeated season is very possible. The game at Harlan County on 10/2 is the biggest obstacle.

Thanks...and we are excited for that four hour one way trip to Harlan County too!

That's a good thing. If you have a playoff road trip, you don't want it to be the first time the team had to make a road trip like that.

I agree, great minds at Holy Cross.

I'm surprised Holmes didn't keep this closer, I know HC is good. But I feel like they've been getting better every week.

HOLY CROSS PULLS AWAY EARLY, CRUISES TO 42-12 WIN OVER HOLMES AT TOM ELLIS STADIUM

Holy Cross made the short trip to Covington's Tom Ellis Stadium on September 11 and delivered a solid performance, defeating the Holmes Bulldogs 42-12. The Indians controlled the game from the late first quarter onward, pairing explosive passing plays with steady rushing and a defense that repeatedly disrupted Holmes' rhythm.

A FAST START FROM HOLMES - AND AN EVEN FASTER RESPONSE FROM HOLY CROSS

Holmes struck first. After a methodical drive aided by two Holy Cross penalties, Michael Chames powered in from four yards out to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. The momentum didn't last long.

On the ensuing possession, Holy Cross quarterback Brian Ferguson found Xavier Thornberry streaking down the sideline for a 43-yard touchdown, tying the game just 90 seconds after Holmes scored. Ferguson and Thornberry connected again minutes later - this time from six yards - pushing Holy Cross ahead 14-6 and flipping control of the game.

HOLY CROSS OPENS THE PLAYBOOK

The Indians' offense showcased balance and creativity throughout the night:

  • Ferguson completed 11 of 17 passes for 257 yards and 4 touchdowns, spreading the ball to multiple receivers.

  • Thornberry finished with two touchdowns and 106 receiving yards, including the game-changing deep strike.

  • Max Hunt added a 24-yard touchdown reception early in the second quarter.

  • Garrett Frederick hauled in a 34-yard score in the third, stretching the lead to 26-6.

Holy Cross' ground game complemented the aerial attack. Dustin Wilson and Charles Oglesby combined for tough inside yards, while Jacob Rieselman delivered the night's longest TD run - a 36-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter that sealed the victory.

HOLMES FIGHTS, BUT TURNOVERS PROVE COSTLY

Holmes' offense showed flashes, particularly through quarterback Konscious Johnson, who accounted for 51 rushing yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Mayes in the fourth quarter. Running back Devon Dunaway added 20 receiving yards and two kick returns that set up decent field position.

But the Bulldogs struggled to sustain drives:

  • Johnson finished 5 of 16 passing with two interceptions.

  • Holmes converted just 1 of 8 third-down attempts.

  • A first-quarter interception by Holy Cross' Dustin Wilson halted a promising drive and shifted momentum permanently.

Holmes' special teams did shine at times - TaeShaun Jackson posted 67 punt-return yards - but field position alone couldn't overcome the offensive miscues.

HOLY CROSS DEFENSE SETS THE TONE

The Indians' defense was disciplined and opportunistic:

  • Three interceptions

  • Only 65 passing yards allowed

Even with 12 penalties for 109 yards, Holy Cross consistently forced Holmes into long-yardage situations and limited explosive plays.

THE VERDICT

Holy Cross earned this 42-12 win by executing its identity: efficient passing, a physical run game, and a defense that forces mistakes. Holmes showed grit - especially early - but turnovers and stalled drives proved too much to overcome.

The Indians move to 4-0 with another convincing performance, while Holmes looks to regroup after a night where effort was present but consistency was elusive.
