Metcalfe County High School introduced its new boys basketball coach today. Brandon Combs joined the Hornets from Warren East, where he served as head boys basketball coach and athletic director. He was a volunteer assistant coach at Metcalfe County High School from 1999 to 2001.

MCHS NAMES NEW BOYS' BASKETBALL COACH

EDMONTON, Ky. (May 1, 2026) - Metcalfe County High School introduced its new boys' basketball coach today.

Brandon Combs joined the Hornets from Warren East, where he served as head boys basketball coach for six years and then as athletic director for six years.

He previously coached at Menifee County, leading them to the 16th region tournament, and Cumberland County, where he won a district championship.

Coach Combs has been part of 7 district championships and 4 regional championships. He was a volunteer assistant coach at Metcalfe County High School from 1999-2001, and was on Coach Tim McMurtrey's coaching staff during the 2001 district championship.

"I am extremely humbled to be selected to lead a basketball program in a place that is special, like Metcalfe County," Combs said. "This is definitely a full circle moment for my family and me, as I started my coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at MCHS while attending WKU.”

MCHS Principal Joseph Eaton said, "We are so excited to have Coach Combs returning to Metcalfe County High School to take the helm of the boys basketball program. He brings extensive experience and a wealth of knowledge about basketball, particularly in the 16th District and the 4th Region. We look forward to his future success at MCHS."

Coach Combs said he will guide his team with Effort, Attitude, and Trust. "We want to be mentioned with other programs as the best in the 4th Region. To do that, we must first work to improve in the 16th District. I want the student-athletes down the road to reflect and think about how their experiences in education-based athletics were and how competing at a high level was fun," Combs said.

Combs graduated from Barren County High School and Western Kentucky University. He received a Master's Degree in Special Education from Campbellsville University and Rank I certification from the University of the Cumberlands.

Coach Combs is married to Whitney Combs, and they have one son, Warner, who is 16.

How did his past teams do when he was head coach (genuine question, I am not familiar with him)?

Here's what I've gathered from a quick search on Riherds. Not a ton of success with just one winning season. But Warren East doesn't have too much history of success as a program, overall, outside the late 80s and early 90s with a few trips to the Sweet 16. The Raiders won just ONE game this year. Were in 14th district with the other Warren Co. schools until a few years ago. 

At Metcalfe, Combs stays in the 4th region but moves to the 16th district where the opponents are Clinton County, Cumberland County, Monroe County, and Russell County. Can he find more success with the Hornets? Best of luck to coach Combs and Metcalfe County.

2014-15: 11-15, lost in 14th district semis to Warren Central

2015-16: 14-15, lost in 14th district semis to Warren Central

2016-17: 13-16, lost in 14th district semis to Bowling Green

2017-18: 16-13, lost in 14th district first round to Warren Central

2018-19: 11-18, lost in 14th district first round to South Warren

2019-20: 6-21, lost in 14th district first round to South Warren

2020-21: 4-10,  lost in 14th district first round to South Warren

Overall: 75-108 (0.408 win percentage)

 

GREAT GUY. He is a great coach and a good person. Very supportive of his coaches , parents, and students. 

Wins and losses aren’t always the best way to classify a coach. I see him as someone who has routinely overachieved everywhere he has been. Especially at Cumberland county.

What was his record there? Is 75-108 at WE overachieving? I genuinely don’t know, just asking.

Agree with you 100% on the wins and losses not being everything. Coaches are there to help these boys become young men!
