16th Region Off-Season Discussion (2026-2027)

I could see referring to Boyd County, as a big time job with some possible recency bias, they lose a ton of talent. However, I don't think Greenup County is big time at all.  Their last semi-final appearance was 2014 prior to that it was 2006. The last time Greenup County team to make the Sweet 16 was in 1997. If I were an admin at Greenup, I would want someone that plans to place their roots in the community and work to develop a program.

Fair enough, and that’s probably my age talking, too. Growing up watching 64th and 63rd district games, I’ve always mentally separated the “big” and “small” teams/schools/jobs as Ashland, Boyd Co, Russell and Greenup vs Raceland, Fairview, Lewis and Rose Hill. Lawrence Co was in that bunch for a while, too but they always seemed to lose to Ashland or Boyd Co most years.

There was no one more rooted in Greenup County than Nathan Sutton. Yet he was one and done. The facilities are great and the history is there. But...other than a season here or there they have been a non-factor since the Randy Ward days. I would love nothing more than to see the Musketeers back in the mix. It's a great place to watch a ball game and we need another strong eastern Kentucky program. I don't know the inner-workings and I don't pretend to have a solution but something has been amiss....for decades.

I agree… I think if there’s one program that should hire an up and coming coach with energy, vision, and willing to stay for several years, it’s Greenup. Recycling one of the older, experienced but unexceptional coaches won’t turn the tide IMO.

What is everyone’s thoughts on preseason rankings? I’ll take a stab… admit I’m biased but with Russell’s departures I believe the RAMS are poised for a strong season out of the 63rd, but the regional title still runs through Ashland and Boyd County…

1. Ashland- perennial favorites. Enough said. Neel, Owens, and more.

2. Boyd Co- do they reload? Lost a ton but a big time school coming off a region title. New coach, though, in Coach Wallace. He is the protege of legendary Coach Anderson. Is it a smooth transition?

3. Raceland- Big time player in Arnett. Bringing back other pieces on a team that made it to Morehead. Continuity is important.

4. Russell- Things don’t seem as bright with departures (graduating and otherwise) but they’ve been solid now for a while. But Raceland is poised to battle them for the 63rd crown!

5. Elliot Co- Solid season last year at 16-10.

6. East Carter- Can challenge for the 62nd district title.

7. Rowan Co- defending 61st district champs and should be again

8. West Carter- can also challenge in the 62nd

9. Fleming County- don’t return a ton from a mediocre squad, but have one of the best coaches in the region. That makes them dangerous come March

10. Morgan County- rounds out a strong 62nd district

11. Lewis- great season last year but lost a ton and will a new coach— not yet named

12. Greenup County- had a down year and now have yet another new coach

13. Bath Co- struggled last year

14. Menifee Co- new coach…. Coming off a 4 win season

15. Fairview

16. Rose Hill

I saw that our troubled neighbor in Lloyd posted their summer schedule. Has anyone seen summer schedules from other 16th region schools? With all the rumors, it would be interesting to watch who is suiting up in what uniforms and what the new coaches are putting in place at their new schools. Has Lewis, another 63rd rival of ours, even hired a new coach yet??

My Rams will be playing at Greenup County High School on June 22nd as their final day of summer ball. Looks to be a quartet of Raceland, Lewis County, Greenup County, and Huntington High School.

I noticed Jagger Prickett is listed on Russell's soccer and basketball roster for 2026-2027 school year on arbiter. I noticed he isn't listed on Lexington Catholic's soccer or basketball roster. Is he back at Russell or still enrolled at Lexington catholic?

I noticed other players that have left schools still on their previous schools roster. So I guess the rosters just rolled over.
