Greenwood Coach, Will Howard resigns

Featured Replies

Fresh from a source inside the school.  Resigned today.

Howard leaves Greenwood as the winningest coach in program history, with a record of 48-40.  He had the second longest tenure of any coach at the school (eight years), behind Mark Nelson's nine seasons.  2022 was probably the best season in his tenure, when the Gators went 9-3, reaching the second round and falling to Owensboro 27-21.  That team was the second Greenwood squad to knock off South Warren, winning 35-21.

Heard plenty of rumblings about this back in the Fall, with his youngest son graduating in the Spring it makes sense. Curious if he’s done with the coaching or if we’ll see him sporting different colors here in the next few months.

This will be an inside hire & go to Tony Adams (as it should). Congrats to Coach Howard on a heck of a career at Greenwood!

Big loss for Greenwood. Great leader of young men.

This is a good job in WKY. If someone can come in and continue to play physical like they have and maybe open up the offense I can see the new coach beating BG and winning the district once in a while.

Oh my another open up the offense will lead to a district title.

Coach Howard did a great job in his time at Greenwood. He will be hard to replace as I always thought he was one of the ones who did it the right way.  Best of luck to him in whatever he decides to do from here.

I remember when all of us Owensboro fans were like "spread offense" this is not football. It took a while but we got us a title. HA HA!

Spread offense is not the "end-all, be-all" for all schools.  It fits some schools, and it is a terrible fit at others.  I have seen plenty of cases where a team tries to implement a spread offense at a school that is a poor fit for it and takes the program from decent to terrible.

I agree. We did this years ago when Prince was here and it didn't go well for whatever reason then he went back to flexbone and we lost to Highlands in 2014. Then Fallin did this around 2018 and we went in 2020, but Demarcus hired Will Barnes and we run the Franklin System and it has been great for us.

I'm not saying you have to throw it all over the place but you can't sit and get in power formations all the time and run run run. You can run in a spread formation too.

Agree 100%.  I do think every team needs an under-center power based package for short yardage and goal line, though.  I see too many spread teams get stopped in short yardage situations running shotgun,4-wide on 3rd and 1.
