What I’m about to say is in noway throwing stones nor defending it being week 12 and a half a year of stats not being recorded/missed.

However, in 20+ years of coaching, half of that as a head coach + having kids get RECRUITED and SIGNED by literally EVERY level(s) of college football?

Not ONCE & I mean NOT ONCE did a single college coach, from any level, ever ask “What are their game/season stats?”  Not once. And they never will, not to me, nor any other coach. That’s not exactly something that parents and kids want to hear, but nor are most hard truths.

The “stats” they care about aren’t on that list.

I can appreciate that, and don't doubt any bit of it being the truth.  But, just thinking out loud here, how many of those college coaches looked up rough stat numbers for those players before they ever contact you?  Maybe see some eye popping stats got them interested and then they contacted you for the untangles.

I guess one of the points of my original thought was, the players deserve to have their stats posted.

Yes. The KHSAA requires submission of stats after each game. If a school does not do so, the ball is in the court of the KHSAA to do something about it.

If it's required, then I would like to see the KHSAA enforce it.  It's sad for the players that may be competing for scholarships or that may want to play college football and coaches can't see player stats.

When did this become a requirement?

I didn't see any mention of mandatory statistics reporting for football this year, but I know it is one of the sports that the KHSAA requires statistical reporting for (they don't require all sports to report). I believe the sports that require statistical reporting are football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball, but I could be mistaken about the complete list. I know at very least football, basketball and baseball all require stat reporting.

Here is what the KHSAA said about football reporting stats in their Sep 9, 2024 press release, 09/09/24 – Initial RPI Rankings Released for Soccer; Stat Leader Reports Released for Football, Volleyball, Field Hockey:

Stat leader reports are updated every day at approximately 3 a.m. ET and include all teams missing stats for no more than two games.

Statistical entry is required of all member schools, and those failing to meet the requirement to enter stats are subject to penalties from the Commissioner’s office, including fines and other actions within the constraints of Bylaw 27.

Member schools are solely responsible for submitting and validating the accuracy of statistical information. If a school or individual is omitted, or information is not updated, that likely means the team in question did not update its statistics through the KHSAA’s online system prior to the re-calculation deadline. When in doubt about statistics calculations, reference can be made to the NFHS Statisticians’ Manual.

The requirement to enter statistics, which has been in place for several years, is always reiterated to coaches during the online rules clinic and to athletics staff during regional meetings. Statistical entry has the primary benefit of allowing member schools to highlight and promote the accomplishment of their student-athletes, which should be a priority for all involved in school-based sports. Inquiries from parents and other fans will be summarily directed back to the athletic director of the member school.

There was a press release that came out from the KHSAA on Jan 5, 2025 (01/06/25 – Initial Stat Leader Reports Released for Basketball) that contained the exact same language as shown in the press release, above, and it applied to mandatory statistics reporting for basketball.

As far as enforcement goes, the KHSAA does have the ability to fine up to $100 per occurrence for late submission of statistics. Reading through the policies, I don't believe fines are mandatory as far as enforcement is concerned...thus some teams seeming neglectful about their reporting.

From the Membership & Institutional Control Policy in the KHSAA Handbook under the Policy Penalties & Board Of Control Issued Fines sub-heading on page 3 of the policy link:

SEC. 2) MAXIMUM FINE OF $100 PER OCCURRENCE FOR:
a) Failure to provide proper game administration personnel at contest site;
b) Use of non-licensed officials in a contest;
c) Late submission of tournament results, financial report or remittance of tournament proceeds by tournament manager;
e) Failure of a tournament/contest manager to report a tournament bracket in a timely manner or failing to report results as requested;
f) Late submission of the names of the school’s athletic personnel, utilizing the official KHSAA online process, no later than the Friday of NFHS week 4 on the standardized calendar; or
g) Late submission from schools of game statistics in specific sports.

SEC. 3) MAXIMUM FINE OF $250 PER OCCURRENCE FOR:
a) Filming or video recording of a scrimmage or contest by representatives of nonparticipating schools without approval of competing teams or tournament manager;
b) Failure to complete the required KHSAA rules clinic for coaches or officials during the prescribed schedule. Payment of this fine does not prevent further penalties already prescribed for failure to
complete the clinic from being imposed;
c) Playing non-sanctioned contest against out of state schools; playing a non-member school or a school not permitted by the bylaws in a contest;
d) Late submission of tournament information from schools including season statistics, team pictures and entry of required rosters;
e) Late submission of any requested reports, or other required documents or late submission of any required form or report not otherwise detailed within this schedule;
f) Late submission of the DP06 form by the sending school to the receiving school that delays the consideration of a ruling for the student;
g) Late submission of the Annual Financial Aid Report Form from member schools;
h) Failure to attend a regional meeting of the member schools, if such meetings are conducted, including make-up meetings;
i) Ejection of a player or coach for unsportsmanlike conduct;
j) Late membership dues payment by school;
k) Late submission of the annual GE01 membership application; or
l) Violation of KHSAA Bylaw 24, Summer Sports and Sport-Activities

To me, this is sad.  Not picking on PRP, on purpose, but I saw this annotation in red below the stats on the scoreboard and thought it was wrong.

PRP has all stat reports but last game and first game.

One of the things that interests me is how "incomplete" some schools' stats are, even when they've reported them. I don't know if the KHSAA has ever spelled out, specifically, which particular stats they do and don't require each team to report. I'm not talking about which particular sports the KHSAA requires schools report game stats for, I'm talking about the particular statistical numbers they require to be reported from each game. For example, I've frequently come across teams that don't report defensive stats. There were a few regular offenders from around NKY who weren't reporting defensive stats back when I used to put together weekly power rankings for NKY football, but admittedly those teams do seem to report defensive stats pretty consistently now, so maybe the KHSAA has made it a point of focus to require those defensive stats to be included in overall game stats.

The KHSAA does refer member schools to the NFHS Statisticians' Manual when it comes to how to report, but I don't believe that the NFHS manual actually comes out and states which stats are REQUIRED to be kept and which are optional. They simply list how each stat for each sport is supposed to be calculated and recorded.

I am a stat guy. I don't obsess like an old time baseball writer over numbers, but it is cool to go back and figure out how many yards per carry etc. If it's demanded by the governing body then it should be done that way if you're a participating memeber.
