This will be interesting to see play out.  It is definitely an issue of crowd control I think.  I saw some complain of the fence not being strong enough and there not being signs saying “don’t lean against the railings.”

But at what point does common sense prevail?  Do we need signs on basketball goals saying “don’t hang on the rim” or say we need stronger goals in case four people are hanging on it?  Do we need signs on baseball fields saying to watch for foul balls?  A person has to assume a certain amount of risk for their negligence.

And about the strength of the bleachers: I assume they are from a company that has supplied bleachers for thousands of schools in the country.  I don’t think the strength of the bleachers/fence is the issue.  The school insurance company requires that bleachers are inspected every year to be covered.

But like was stated above, the students should have been educated, or at least told by the site manager not to lean on the fence.  Just like if you see someone hanging on the rim you tell them to stop because of the potential dangers.

It is stuff like this that shows that common sense isn't all that common (sadly).

The comments on Twitter are blaming JCPS facilities for not being safe.  However, no metal fence at any facility would be able to hold the weight of several dozen people pushing it forward, with other people on the other side pulling it down.  The tournament managers and school staff should have been controlling the crowd.  But it was also the end of the game so that they could have been preparing for the trophy presentation and not been at that exact spot of spontaneous celebration.  

But, shouldn’t they be designed and built knowing this is going to happen anyway?
