How has Atherton improved so much? Weren’t they pretty bad just a few years ago?

Got a young coach that has energized the program, and has parents behind him. Got some top city talent to transfer in as well. Also, credit a in-city cupcake schedule.

If the frosh and jv teams are as successful, then I'll believe in the Ravens.

For many years they were very bad but they've now won at least one playoff game in each of the last four seasons, including regional final appearances the last two years where they were handled by Owensboro and Bowling Green. As @Hungover_in_Andover mentioned, the schedule has been weak but they've made some improvements this season with games against Central Hardin, Mercer County, Manual, Fern Creek, and North Oldham (all programs that are traditionally solid or better, although not all are having great seasons this year). No doubt those schedule changes are with the hope of being more competitive against the top-tier in Class 5A.

Regarding transfers, I can't speak to that but I do remember @Purple88 saying a couple years ago that the school was improving academically and some students who might have once went to Manual were starting to attend Atherton. All of that together makes for a solid football program.

That has been the biggest key.  Most of the JCPS programs struggle b/c of consistent coaching turnover.  You see it often.  When you get a coach that will last longer than 2 or 3 years, you typically see that JCPS program start to turn the corner and win some games instead of being a consistent doormat.  Nino White has been with Atherton for 6 or 7 years now and they have improved just about every year.  He's been able to retain quite a few assistant coaches as well, which never hurts either.  As far as getting top talent to transfer into Atherton, there is another connection and a reason why kids are choosing Atherton whereas before, they wouldn't have even consider transferring there.
