Who do you guys think is the best coach in the 8th region?

My opinion is David Levitch or Chris Gaither.

I would say it's probably one of the two, but a dark horse for this title is Jason Burns. Year in and year out Burns finds a way to compete with every team in the region no matter how much larger their population numbers are.  

Coming off a regional championship and losing a vast majority of their offensive contributions, Spencer County was not considered a threat to win the region. However, we just turned the page in the calendar to February, and they are right back into the competition with a chance to cut down the nets at The Roy in back-to-back seasons. 

Simpson, Levitch, Burns, Gaither in that order.  

 

The teams with the best players in the region since 2020 are.

Collins:  McKnight and Vail

North:  Roberts, Higdon, Anderson, Neil, Fisher.

Oldham:  Green, Campbell, Slone

Woodford:  Johnson

Spencer:  Cox and Erhardt

 

The teams that have the best players USUALLY wins.

I'll take the old vet Steven Simpson, but I love the creativity offensively that Levitch has.  Gaither is about as good of a defensive coach that you'll see as well!

I would also think Steiner and Renner deserve some recognition too.

Gaither

Simpson/Steiner/Burns - Cannot decide between the 3 LOL. 

The fact that no "Mefford" is coaching in the 8th region makes my head spin.

In terms of North Oldham, they had Roberts, Higdon, and Anderson all graduate. Neil and Fisher were not big names by any means until they became the star guys in their senior year. Now onto this year where yet again had no players really on the radar, and the top team in the region. 

Spencer County graduated their three best players last season, losing the core of their regional championship team. Yet again, the Bears have a legitimate shot to win it again after no one had them on the radar. 

At what point is it talent development rather than "having the guys"? Being competitive year in and year out is impressive, especially after losing a vast majority of your core group in one year. How coaches respond to that is what separates the good from the greats, and these two coaches have done just that. 

 

If Levitch had the talent , athletes and teams Woodford has had the past 4 North Oldham 4 peats as region champs.

Although I agree Burns does a great job at Spencer County, I have to respectfully disagree with your take on Spencer this year.  There is no way they win the 8th this season.  I know teams have to get to the Roy first but it is a three team race to Rupp.

In regards to Neal and Fisher at NO.  They both started on the state tournament team as sophomores and on the regional runner up team as juniors.

In my humble opinion, the 8th region has the best coaches in the state.   My list would be the exact same as everyone else’s .  My order would be 

1) Gaither -  his basketball IQ is off the chart.

2) Levitch- let’s not forget he started coaching at a very young age almost zero coaching experience.  He has had some brilliant assistants over the years. 
 

3) Simpson - someone at his age that still runs modern offensives is really impressive. 
 

4) Renner- he is in the basketball hall of fame and won a state title 

 

5) Burns- gets the most out of the talent he has. 
 

6) Steiner- has had some great teams over the years.  He is very well respected across NKY and all of the 8th region

Will Steiner ever get over the Hump and win the 8th?  SK has the highest enrollment in the region.  Seems year end and year out they just can't get it done when it counts.  I think last year was their best chance.

Simon Kenton has just as good of a shot this year as they did last year... and in other years past. They have a very solid core group and some great role players to follow. I would not be surprised if they pulled it off this year.

I don’t mean this in a negative way. But is Steiner the Rick Barnes of the 8th region?

He is obviously a really good coach but sometimes whether it is just being unlucky or maybe it’s their nervousness in big moments that is reflected onto their players or inability to make late season adjustments.  Who knows the reason but Simon has had some good teams over the years but just can’t win the big one.

I agree that they have enough talent this year to get it done.  I think they can beat anyone in the region on any given night. It will be fun to see if they can accomplish their goal!
