Final from Boyle Co. 

I tried to tell people Lincoln is better than Boyle County. These 2 teams will more than likely play again in the first round of the 45th District tournament at Boyle, and I still think Lincoln wins. 

Boyle is good enough to beat anybody but DCA and inconsistent enough to lose to anybody else. 

I watched the replay and all Boyle did was shoot 3 pointers all game, they wasn't trying to drive or nothing. Coach Jackson had Seneca Driver surrounded the whole game, he wasn’t going to let him beat them. Boyle played Zone and the guards on top of the zone are lazy.

Always hard to pick against Coach Jackson at tournament time.  He always seems to get his teams to peak at the right times.

One thing you can be sure of is that Coach Jackson will do what he can to give his teams the best chance to win.

Absolutely. That’s been a problem with Boyle over the last 3+ years. A lack of discipline on shot selection has been a real Achilles heel for them. Little movement on offense other than what’s created off the dribbble. Seemingly no focus on getting the ball to the kids that should be shooting it as opposed to those who shouldn’t and just an issue with overall quality of looks. Hard to tell, by watching their games, who the staff felt was their best offensive option(s). Haven’t really seen that since Imfeld graduated, and I think that was just because he was a prolific scorer who had the ball in his hands by default.

Still an impressive win by Lincoln, especially given the margin. I previously stated that Boyle was double figures better from a talent perspective, and I stand by that. Clearly the coaching advantage goes to Lincoln, and you saw that in their defensive adjustments.

I also said that it would take a very good shooting night by Lincoln to beat Boyle, and I think that’s what happened last night.

Boyle has better athletes sure no one will argue that but athletes win football games not basketball games. Boyle also struggles with a real big talent drop off when it comes after Brown and Driver. It’s hard to win games against Lincoln with 2-3 players capable of creating and making their own shots with the way Lincoln packs the paint and controls the tempo. Lincoln beat Boyle at their own game nonetheless last night with the press which single handedly helped them extend the lead. Coach Jackson is a great, storied coach and can control the game tempo against almost any team, you simply have to have BASKETBALL players and not athletes that will come and make a few plays on the boards/defensively. We shall see when these teams match up in the district.  It should be a fun 45th/12th tournament!

I predict Lincoln to upset DCA in the district finals.

Boyle’s top 5 scorers average 12, 11, 10, 8 & 8. And they lost another double figure scorer to transfer a couple weeks ago. That’s about as much parity as you will see on a high school team. So I don’t agree with the narrative that they have 2 players and then there’s a drastic drop off. The numbers say otherwise.

This Boyle roster has plenty of talent to be a top team in the 12th this year.

Well I don’t agree with you that Boyle is double digits better than Lincoln, as they proved Friday night.  You have put Lincoln down all season getting your jabs in on how Boyle is so much more talented than Lincoln and the only reason Lincoln wins games is because of their coach.  Like I said before and will say it again Lincoln has a great coach in Jackson but sometimes you have to give the players a little credit as well.  Also, you continue to question the Boyle County coaching every time they lose a game.  Last I checked Coach Webb and his Rebels won the 45th district title last year in an upset to DCA, so it’s not always coaching.  
  Everyone keeps talking about Boyle, DCA and Lincoln but I wouldn’t count out Garrard.  I’ve watched them several times this season and they have really impressed me.   It’s going to be a fun and competitive 45th/12th region tournament.

First, Lincoln has some good players just not enough, and a big part of that is that they lack size in a region where the top teams are very big. To beat those teams, they have to shoot the ball extremely well, better than their averages. They have players that are capable of that, but it’s not going to happen night in and night out. And yes, they are well coached. That’s my assessment and it hasn’t changed.

As far as assessing any coach, I don’t gauge them based on just wins and losses, and certainly not in any one game. I look at their body of work. As a high school coach especially, as far as talent goes, you have to play the hand your dealt each year. Then there’s strength of schedule they play that plays a huge role in winning percentage. And as far as winning or losing one postseason game, I don’t overemphasize that either. Yes, they upset DCA in the district championship last year only to get run out of the gym in their first regional game. 

So how do I assess the job a coach does? Look at their schedule. How many games do they lose that they shouldn’t, win that they shouldn’t, and do they take care of business in games they should win? Do they adjust what they do based on personnel year to year and based on who they are playing? Do the players know their roles and play with discipline? And does the team get better as the year goes? 
 

So any comments I make about the job a coach does is viewed through that prism. Not knee jerk reactions based on a single game, win or loss. But over the course of a season, then over the course of multiple seasons.

Sounds like you’re an expert in coaching and analyzing games.  Maybe you need to apply for the coaching staff next year since you have all the answers.  It’s easy to sit back and constantly criticize when you’re sitting behind the screen of a computer.

Not sure what’s controversial about what I said. That’s pretty much how coaches are assessed, especially the part about what they do in games they should/shouldn’t win and do their teams improve? All the other stuff I referenced ends up impacting those results IMO. Pretty common sense stuff and the results are what they are. Wherher I could do a better job as a coach is irrelevant. I’m not in that role and have no interest in being a coach. Instead, I like I assume you and most others on this site, are on here because we like to talk the game and often times have school specific  interests.

Coaching isn’t an easy job, just like officiating. But with both jobs, some are good at it and others aren’t. And both signed up knowing the public criticism that are part of those roles. Yet it seems that some people are very willing to call out officials yet more sensitive about holding coaches accountable. I know plenty of officials that say exactly what you said above. If you’re going to complain about the officiating, and you think you know so much, then maybeyou should sign up and give it a try.
