Franklin County 1st round bye

Featured Replies

I may have missed it, but don't see a thread topic explaining what happened in 4A district 3, a 6 team district, that it doesn't have 4 teams in the playoffs.

I noticed this morning that Franklin County apparently has a 1st round bye. I know Valley had some forfeits earlier in the season due to playing an ineligible player, but it's a 6 team district. Why isn't their a 4th playoff team this year?Screenshot_20241103_092604_Chrome.thumb.jpg.7c6cd11be8f02c19674c36968610cb8e.jpg

Whoever was supposed to play Franklin likely forfeited.

Louisville Western

Why wouldn’t Valley or Jeffersontown be given the fill-in chance? (3 way tie for 4th originally.  Winning tie-breaker to forfeit doesn’t make sense).

Not sure if it is allowed. The only time I can ever remember a team being subbed in was in 1997 when Paris withdrew from the playoffs after having forfeited a district game early in the season. The Greyhounds had actually earned the 4-seed, but had to forfeit the spot early in the week and were replaced by 5th place Frankfort, who then lost to Campbellsville in the first round. The articles below give a little more information. I can't recall any other situation where a team was replaced after the bracket came out.

Still to me the integrity of the playoffs should be maintained if possible.  To win a three way tie to forfeit seems bizarre.  Take the next team which would have been the head-to- head winner between Valley and Jefferstown.  Simple solution and does not unnecessarily advance Franklin Co. with a bye.

Isn’t Western the team that withdrew playing Campbellsville earlier in the year? Then two days later picked up a game against Shawnee?

Yessir.

Updated information from the KHSAA regarding withdrawal from postseason play:

If such withdrawal is prior to the final breaking of all ties:

  • There is no penalty.
  • If applicable (a 1-4 seed withdrawing and more than four teams in a district), then the bracket may be edited to allow a replacement team.

If such withdrawal is after the breaking of ties:

  • The member school shall be assessed a by-class fine schedule for withdrawal from postseason.
  • In addition to the cost of trophies, the fine is $1200 for Class 1A and 2A, $1500 for Class 3A, $2000 for Class 4A and 5A, $2500 for Class 6A.
  • All except $400 per fine will be sent to the opponent whose game is canceled.
  • The fine may only be removed or reduced due to natural disaster, the results of documented and declared pandemic situations or other seemingly catastrophic occurrence.
  • Teams withdrawing after this point will be considered to have forfeited the contest.
