When you run a marathon it is an intensely personal race. You set your own expectations and then focus on fulfilling them.

 

For nine months I have been running a marathon to become the Republican nominee and the next President of the United States. While I started this race for President with only my family at my side and a handful of supporters and friends, this race is no longer personal for me. In these final miles I am running for more than myself, I am running for you and I am running for the people you care about.

 

The debate Sunday and the straw poll vote this past Saturday at the Family Research Council's Washington Briefing have helped propel us forward. It is a new day for our campaign. Let us set a new goal then.

 

We asked you last week to help us raise an additional $200,000 by the end of October 31st. We ll on Sunday we reached that goal just after the debate and well before our deadline.

 

Yesterday, we set a new goal of $450,000 by the end of October. And since then, remarkably, we have raised an additional $137,562 including new support from over 700 first time contributors. This is a goal we must reach. We are just $112,538 dollars away. If you haven't yet made a contribution or can afford to make another please make a contribution of $1(A Buck for Huck!), $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, $500 or $1,000 today and help us make up the difference.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Two Republican presidential candidates had some tough talk Thursday about Social Security's future at a forum sponsored by the nation's largest group for seniors.

John McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, called for another debate on President Bush's plan to create private savings accounts as part of Social Security. He also urged citizens to become less reliant on Social Security as a retirement income.

 

"The dirty secret in America today is that Medicare and Social Security are going broke. They're going broke and they're not going to be there for future generations of young Americans, and we owe them the responsibility to make hard choices now," McCain said.

 

Huckabee proposed giving retirees the option of a one-time Social Security payout. He also trumpeted the Fair Tax plan to encourage personal savings. The Fair Tax would eliminate all federal income taxes in favor of a national sales tax.

I think a one time payout of Social Security is probably a bad idea. Too many people would blow it in their pre-retirement days. Possible a payout to a private retirement fund would be okay, but only if no early distributions were allowed.

Social Security has done well this long leave it alone. But incourage other types of investment for retirement.

In recent days, that talk has escalated to a new level of buzz: Huckabee's doing so well in Iowa, he just might be able to win the Iowa Republican caucuses.

 

Wow. Conventional wisdom dictates former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's going to win Iowa. Ever since that straw poll, the buzzmeisters have slotted Huckabee to take second or third. To suggest he's going to win Iowa is taking it to a new level.

 

After Thompson's late start, he's lighting no fires in Iowa. His speech at the big Reagan Dinner Saturday night was a boilerplate thing he could have given anywhere. Romney didn't show. Huckabee got the only standing ovation.

 

As Republicans seek to rebuild from their defeat of 2006 and try to stave off a similar loss in 2008, they might study the Book of Huckabee.

 

"I'm a conservative, but I'm not mean about it," he tells audiences. He shows up at events with minority groups. His pro-life message also encompasses health care for poor women and a concern for children. His talk about education reform includes developing creative skills through art and music.

 

He had fun playing the bass guitar in his band at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake - an event that attracted more than 600 people on Friday. A former Baptist pastor, Huckabee peppers his speeches with Scripture and rock-music lyrics.

 

You guys well know my stance on abortion but I bolded the exact way I feel and Huckabee models that. You cannot just outlaw it without programs for pregnant women and children.

LBC, you said he has a "Reagan Spirit." Reagan talked big about the Abortion issue but he didn't do much to change it. Not all of his Supreme Court nominations reflected changing Roe v Wade. Little changed from before Reagan took the oath and left the office, at least in the discussion of abortion.

Actually story said that. Being a Marketing type person, I knew that if I used that R word, Republicans would come and read the thread. I am sneaky that way.

 

I never voted for Republican. Voted Mondale and was too young for Carter/Reagan but would have voted Carter.

 

The atmosphere at that time was much different than it is now. At that time, probably couldn't get much done about it. I think more people are turned off on the issue because they see it as it truly is now. A taking of a babies life so that someone is not inconvenient in their lifestyle.

At this point, I think it is easier being 2, 3 or 4 rather than #1. A recent study I read about said that Hillary and Rudy get the most press but over 40% of it is negative press. They are getting beat up almost daily and it is easier for someone like a Huckabee to build momentum instead of trying to sustain it against a wage of negative press from the media.

 

And I don't wear any panties.:jump::sssh::scared::eek:

He is going to be fair and balanced today by a spot on O'Reilly and Hannity and Combs tonight.
