Ratings use avg. margin of victory/loss applied to avg. rating of strength of schedule played. Out of state opponents are not included in the ratings. There is a cap of 40 points on margin for teams that have 40 point or less differential to prevent ratings increase by running up the score. When there is more than 40-point differential between teams the higher rated team is not penalized for keeping score smaller by substitution and running clock. This comes more into play during district contests where there can be a wide disparity in teams' ratings.

I know both rating systems call them like they see them, I just find it interesting in a few cases. 

I am trying to figure out how Owensboro Catholic is #2 in the entire state. They are #17 in calpreps and that looks more fitting to me.

My ratings are weighted more to average margin of victory than Calpreps. I think it's better to weight it that way than go more towards strength of schedule so it's possible they are a little overrated but teams that play a tough schedule can be overrated if weight more in that direction. The key is to find the sweet spot in the middle so after playoffs I may tweak them if do worse than Calpreps and Massey.

Thanks for the information. At least we understand now. The RPI, to be honest, nobody has a clue. They reward teams playing a crappy schedule. That's all I know.

That helps explain O Cath. Only one game closer than 26 points. No losses. That margin of victory weighting adds to them being over rated.

That said, why is Beechwood so far behind? They have a 1 point win, a 12 point win and every other win is by 21 points or more. BW does have a 21 point loss to Cov Cath that probably is an overweight negative in your rankings. Is that what knocks BW so far behind in your rankings?

O Cath point totals are 434-76.

BW point totals are 445-146.

Two good teams to study, compare and perhaps use to tweak your formula.

I think Ryle is high at #3 here and at #5 with Calpreps.

Mayfield is picked to beat Beechwood and LCA in Calpreps. Yet they are both ranked higher than Mayfield. Interesting. OC is picked to beat Mayfield by a slim margin, yet is ranked way higher.

That’s so interesting. I would say Mayfield has the better chance to beat Catholic.
