The rivalry is dead. I don't think it's coming back.

I think the same can be said of both of the Boone County rivalries mentioned in the article. Having to find a replacement for Coach Owen Hauck was one major hurdle for Boone. Rick Thompson did a good job of it, all things considered. The changing demographics in Boone County with everyone moving out to Union, Burlington and Hebron has definitely been their biggest hurdle since the article was written in 1993, and that hurdle may be the defacto dagger in the heart of the Rebels. But Coach Jeff Griffith's completely failed attempt to come in and install a platoon system with the Rebels in 2013 really sped up Boone County High School's death rattle.

Would the Tilghman and Covington Catholic debacle qualify? PT is 0-2 against them in the finals and 0-1 in the semis. Maybe not, but it's a hurdle I'd like Tilghman to overcome.

Debacle? That's a thing of beauty.?

It’s all about perspective I guess! ??

Male vs. Manual is noticeably missing.

Winner winner! That was the first thing I noticed. At the point the article was written, Male had won 4-straight and had won 9 of the previous 11 meetings in The Old Rivalry. But that seems like a very clear miss, to me.

@Purple88 who would you say the biggest rival is right now for Bowling Green? ...or has been?

Good question CWB!

I definitely think BGs biggest rival right now is South Warren  But that rivalry is only roughly 10 years old. Still their have been great games, anticipated games and I really think the onset of social media spices the rivalry up  its easy to be tough behind tough words typing on your phone  But that IMO escalated rhetoric beyond the line at times and I don’t like part of it  But that has been reigned in more of late  And now South is set to exit the 5A door at the end of next season possibly never to return  So while I’m glad they have agreed to continue playing it likely won’t be quite as venomous as the district grudge matches that have significant playoff implications or simply end a whole senior classes careers  That is a real rivalry!

From the early 80s to roughly 2000 was the heyday of my time at BG and the rival was easily Warren Central  And this was football and basketball (it’s still basketball vs Central who still has a great program).
Some outright classic games preceded by harmless pranks with water balloons and the like are what I fondly recall

Before this time 3 teams come to mind as teams I would put in BGs rivalry basket and include:

- Owensboro - the Red Devils are the longest played opponent for BG  Yes BG has had good fortune of late but in the late 50s and 60s it was all Red Devils

- Franklin Simpson - the Wildcats have had some great teams over the years and there was a time the football battles with Franklin was one of the top games of the season  VERY hard fought games  with respect to them

- Glasgow  This is an older rivalry too that hasn’t seen the field in many years but I remember when I was a Frosh in 1984 and we went to Glasgow and it was a real dogfight that the BG kicker missed an extra point and BG lost 28-27  The teammate made the kicker take their lunch trays back to the lunch room for months after that

2 Final teams:

Warren East - when I was a little kid I though East was a big rival to BG and perhaps they really were in basketball  As East had some great teams  But in football it’s pretty much all BG, EXCEPT for a frog-strangler of a Homecoming night my Frosh year too and East beat BG 6-0.  Good times

Greenwood - OH the Gators!  They are a fine school with good players and coaches but unlike the 84 East Miracle, the Gators just haven’t been able to break through vs BG  They have had a few chances and I think they will beat BG sometime  But not this year

So with South moving out of district and Dragons moving back in  NOW What?
Well it will be a change  I honestly hate it for Central as it’s just not time yet

Purple;  Agreed on the Bowling Green vs. Franklin-Simpson games of the 1990s. I was living in Franklin during that time. Both teams were in the same Class for several years (3A) and even when the Wildcats dropped down to 2A they were still great games!
