Most 9th Region Championships since 1990

Featured Replies

The 2001 regional championship was more exciting. Overtime, maybe double overtime, Highlands wins on a last second shot.

It was double overtime. Neither team played very well though from what I recall. I'll still go with 1993 and , yes, partly because the Cougars actually won unlike 2001.

With all of Highlands success in the last decade, it makes one wonder why HHS faithful spend so much time debating the absence of a kiddie program for their current woes. Seems as though the Birds were fine until very recently.

I dont think you can attribute the success the Birds had from 1996-1998 and in 2001 to the Ft. Thomas Jr. basketball league being so strong in the early 90's. Those teams had some major athletes like Lorenzen,Smith, Glaser, Stegman, Neltner, who all were select players. You cant tell me they came up in the Ft. thomas jr. league in fact i know for a fact they didnt.

It basically says that unless they get a good feeder system going it is going to take having 3-4 major athletes coming through the system and those things just dont happen very often. That Lorenzen/smith era was one that may never happen again.

By the way, who was on the 2001 Highlands team that won in double overtime? Neltner, ????, ????

2001 last regional championship is fading from memory. Last year was their best shot in a while and they fell short to the eventual champ. IMO I don't see another one in the near future. The frosh team seems to be very good. we can wait and see how they work out. Judging by the same few that are discussing the "woes" it does not seem to be much of an issue.

Kevin Gilles. 6'5 lights out shooter

Kevin Gilles would have been a sophomore then. Ross Neltner started. Gino was on that team. Klingenberg, Witte? They would have been soph's as well, though.

If there has been a more exciting 9th region final and ending than Conner-Holy Cross in 1993, I have not seen it.

Holmes-Holy Cross 199?

Holmes-Holy Cross 199?

1991 At Campbell Co Middle School Gym. Double overtime I think. Andre McClendon had to keep leaving the game due to cramping in his legs.

Denny Hungler was sucker punched above his eye creating a golfball sized welt. He not only came back and played which totally inspired the crowd and his team, he also hit a couple huge free throws down the stretch with only one eye functioning!

This game was more exciting than the 1993 finals for HC fans because of the outcome. The '93 finals have to be labled the "most depressing" vs the most exciting.

Conner won on a last second shot by Jr Troy Fryman. HC had Harney, Corey Goetz, Todd Clark, Jason Williams, I THINK Erik Goetz as well.

I can still see that last second shot in my mind like it just happened. I think it's permanently etched in the brain.Great game, great shot! I also thought I'd never forget the kid's name but maybe I did. I thought it was TRAVIS Fryman.

HC had sophomores Harney, Clark, Williams & seniors Erik Goetz, Brad Saalfeld. Corey Goetz played '94-'95.

Jason Hurst played for that Conner team, also Greg Laws was a good player for the Cougs. I believe Messmer's son played some good ball down the stretch in '01 for HHS, the Birds were so solid during that error it's hard for me to remember who played on what team. Moeves was very good during his years in Ft. Thomas, they had some solid teams, I tired watching them beat my guys every year.
