I don't. But to imply that college tuition will increase because the minimum wage increases is silly! There's a tuition hike every year regardless. Food keeps going up...even though there's been no wage increase; Housing goes up...even though there's been no wage increase. To predict the downfall of the economy because minimum wage is increased is not presenting the full gammut, IMO.

Personally, I would rather see congress give incentives to employers to pay for more health insurance and cover more people than raise the minimum wage.

Not silly at all. What makes you think the colleges are going to eat that cost when they have shown every inclination in the past to raise prices at the drop of a hat? Most, if not all, of their working students make less than the new minimum wage. The colleges I've checked into where my daughter might go (midwest) are about $6.25 to $6.50 per hour.

Because he's doing work-study to reduce his tuition, and the jobs pay minimum wage.

 

At better than $30,000/year that $5.15 an hour ain't goin' very far! :lol: Granted the increase won't help a tremendous amount, but every dollar matters!

I am going to say based upon my knowledge of you and what I read in your posts, your son would be a great employee. And that if he wanted to find another position that would make him more money, he could. Businesses will pay more for good employees rather than lose them.

Let's just say there's more to the situation than just getting a job. The program he's in requires that he carries 18hrs/semester plus be involved in 2 on-campus activities. His only real option at working is work-study, and the money is credited directly to his tuition account. The job he has is extremely flexible and works with his schedule and hours of availablity.

I wondered if that wasn't the case. That the reason why he was at a minimum wage job was more his choice than the quality of employee he is and the job he was at.

Absolutely correctmundo. And it will help them.

 

But it is not as farreaching and beneficial as the politicians are trying to sell it as for the working middle class.

 

I will say for this public school teacher who would be classified as middle class, economically, Bush's tax cuts put more in my pocket than this minimum wage increase has/will.

Well, I'm not one who's expecting any personal gain from the raise in minimum wage, but I absolutely do not begrudge the help it will give to those who do benefit.

 

Maybe it's the industry in which I work, or the number of young adults I know trying to put themselves through school, but, I do think it's needed, whether or not I personally benefit or not.
