Frankfort 37 Iroquois 0

Final per the State Journal.

Congrats to Coach Yogi Davis in his first win as a Head Coach!

Way to go Frankfort.

Much needed win for this program that is in such a fragile state. Congrats to Coach Davis on win #1.

That’s nice to hear for the Frankfort side of things, but I have to ask the question because I am indeed unfamiliar with Iroquois, what exactly is going on? Only 32 kids on the roster with 5 seniors as a 5A program, a Louisville school as well, no? Just shocking to me.

Nice to see Frankfort and Coach Davis get a win. Can they gain confidence, unity and build on this?

And the roster lists 15 of the 32 as freshmen. They're on their sixth coach in ten years too.

None of this is breaking news, but in regards to sports, I think there's a caste system in JCPS. If the school is not some combination of - Class 6A, "Traditional," or in an East/Northeast location, one will find low "Participation Value" numbers, coaching turnover, and substandard athletic facilities. The facilities issues at least are beginning to be addressed.

The remaining schools don't offer the full range of team sports or field "full" squads (much less Varsity, JV and Frosh levels of play). Outside of football and boys/girls basketball, the varsity teams may be playing by schedule or forfeit/cancellation, as few as half the games allowable by the KHSAA.

Open enrollment draws the athletic elite to those schools that can offer those opportunities. In addition to superior academics, there's a reason Male's boys teams and Manual's girls teams are a cut above the rest. Factor in many private school options, it's no wonder that three quarters of JCPS schools fare poorly outside of city/county competition.

I imagine some of these factors keep good coaching candidates, looking to do more than find a stepping stone to a "better" position, from making the effort to build a program almost from scratch.

There are maybe at least two too many high schools in the JCPS system. The enrollment decline overall is striking. For instance, Valley was once one of the largest public schools in the state with 2000+ students; now they're barely 800.

It's been 30-40 years since Westport, Stuart, Durrett, and Thomas Jefferson, Ahrens, etc., were repurposed. It seems simplistic, but I wonder if further streamlining at JCPS best serves their students and student athletes.
