I went back and looked at the 1999 playoffs. Only 4 classes. Not everyone got in. Close to half the round one games were blowout, running clock level games. Same story in 2000. Also, 5 weeks of games with the title game played the first week of December.

There is nothing that can be done to stop blowout games in football.

Well, I wouldn't say "nothing".

It's not easy, but there is something that can be done.  Programs have done it.

  • What would be next?  Teams wanting the ability not to have to play Douglass in the regular season too?  I don't like it at all. Either cut the classes back or eliminate a round of the playoffs.

  • The 4 classes was perfect. But, unfortunately not everyone got a ribbon. Too many thought it was unfair little Jim Bob played all those years and never got his chance to experience post season footbal

  • Because you signed up to play.

I remember all those games well:

Friday, December 3, 1999
Beechwood 45 Hancock County 22
Boyle County 29 Glasgow 6

Saturday, December 4, 1999
Highlands 48 Owensboro 10
St. Xavier 34 Bryan Station 31 (OT)

There are so many great matchups in round 2 tonight. Doesn't that make people rethink their desire to limit the playoffs? I still like my most recent idea the best. Everything stays as is except you need 2 wins to automatically qualify for post season play. Win 2 and you are in. Think of it like college football where you need a certain number of wins to be bowl eligible.

If a team has 0 or 1 win, they can still opt in and play if they choose. If the brackets have a 0 or 1 win team that does not choose to play, the at gives a bye to the other team in round 1.

This idea let's everyone who qualifies and wants to play a post season game the opportunity to play. It also gives teams having tough seasons and added goal to shoot for during the season - get win #2 to possibly play one more game in the post season. More opportunities for more kids.

Personally, I love this idea.  I agree with it all, except the "opt-in" part.  Just stop after the "you have to have two wins.

Now, for the sake of compromise, I would not mind one bit if a team that had less then two wins was allowed to play a non-playoff 11th game.  We used to play 11 games seasons years ago.  I would not mind one bit for a struggling team to get the opportunity to practice an additional week and play one more game against another team with less then two wins for an opportunity to get a win to end the season on a high note.

And, for the record, I do not want to limit the playoffs.  If it was up to me we would play a 20 game season and football would go on forever.  But, I digress........
