Bardstown 20 Greenwood 15

Featured Replies

Scoreless first half. Neither team generated much offense. Bardstown lost their top receiver (also a starting corner) when he was hit while down with his helmet off, opening a large gash over his eye, and concussion.

Tigers made some halftime adjustments and dominated the 3rd quarter, including an opening drive that used half the 3rd quarter clock. The two Tyleeq Williams TD’s gave them a 14-0 lead.

It seemed like it might stay that way until a Tiger muffed a punt return in the shadow of his own end zone, and a subsequent Gator TD pass breathed new life into them. The Gators then forced a punt and drove the ball down and punched it in with 26 seconds left to go in the game. Electing to go for 2, and aided by a Tiger offside, Greenwood converted and seemingly had the game won 15-14.

After a squib kick was returned to the 42, a hook-and ladder gained 6, and an incomplete pass, with 6 seconds on the clock, Senior QB Brayden Clark hit Williams with a long pass down the seam, and Williams out sprinted the Gator defenders for the game winning TD as time expired shortly after midnight eastern time.

The article better describes the drama of the final, walkoff play, as well as correcting my description of the interception that led to Greenwoods 2nd TD, and paying due respect to Greenwood LB/TE Lofton Howard (#16) who had a tremendous game.

I thought the old rule was that you went from one at home and two on the road. Has that changed?

It’s probably still the rule, but some people are also believers in that if you have chance to win the game on a single offensive play from the three yard line (and in this case eventually the 1.5 yard line), you take it. If you believe in your offense’s ability to execute, the stats probably favor going there.

Of course, that also assumes that you don’t give up a 41 yard bomb TD as time expires. Ironically, had Greenwood just gone for the tie and played for OT, Bardstown probably knees on it and goes to extra time as well.

Also, and I’m sure the Greenwood coaches don’t know this and it wouldn’t have been a factor - Greenwood has never won an OT game. Ever. 0-3 all-time. Haven’t so much as played one in 12 years.

Congrats Bardstown!  Great win to open the year!

Brutal for the Gators!

Clip of the walk-off TD. How does a team not put deep over the top coverage on the last play of the game against the player who accounted for all of the opponent’s scores?
