Let me again make clear some truths about political stem cell hype. First off, the federal government is already funding stem cell research. It was started during the Bush administration. The law only bans federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. There are no federal laws prohibiting private embryonic stem cell research.

 

Again, I think its a mistake for the new Congress to immediately jump on the tinder-keg issues.

 

If they are so full of potential why are companies not jumping all over them for the opportunity to create a product that cures serious diseases or fixes other medical problems? And I agree HHSDad, I think Democrats should probably wait until they take a Presidency or pick up a greater gain in Congress than the fragile majority they have now before they begin working on something as divisive as this.

You wouldn't foolishly call it "overplayed emotion" if it was you or a loved one that was dying or in need. The fact is, the only INTELLIGENT argument is that we will never find what we don't strive to discover.

 

I guess Ferdinand and Isabella should have denied Columbus his three ships, based on the theory that he didn't have any "proof." I guess that whole "round world" thing was just overplayed emotion.

Just be prepared to fail because there is not a scintilla of valid evidence that it will work. However, there will be a lot of money to be made, a lot of political "hay" to be gathered, and a lot of hearts to be broken.

On the first 100 hours, it seems like the Dems are taking a page out of the GW playbook that didn't work.

 

He talked about his election in '04 being a mandate.

 

The Dems seemed to be assuming that their election in '06 is a mandate to push through things they want.

 

It didn't work well for GW. Wonder how it will play out for the Dems in '08. They actually push things that the voters (notice I didn't say citizens) are not too keen (there is a word for those of you who grew up in the 50's) on and they may see the same result that the Reps got in '06 from the "Bush mandate" in '04.

Well, I suppose you are entitled to your euphoric feelings. I guess I should commend your blind faith. However, I tend to rely more on evidence. Unfortunately, what will likely prove to be false hope doesn't mend hearts but, instead, creates more broken hearts. Of course, those in the medical field who will use this to make piles of money and those who use this issue for votes and political points will thrive at the expense of the vulnerable. But, then, that is not a new concept, is it?

Not sure that is accurate. Edison failed over 1,000 times before he was successful with the light bulb. Lincoln failed, failed, failed and failed before he was elected as President of the US. The glue that is on the back of the Post-It note was a huge failure as they were trying to create a glue that's bonds could not be broken.

I am entitled to my completely logical and reasonable opinion, and you are entitled to disregard it. Such disregard is what the Dark Ages were all about! :lol:

 

It cracks me up to hear someone justify their agenda with comments like "wishing and hoping." By definition, it's not "wishing and hoping" when you're actually taking action.

 

You know, it's a shame the benefits that will surely come from this vital research can't be restricted only to those who stepped up to do the right thing when it really mattered. Because you can be sure that those that didn't will be standing in line with everyone else, pushing themselves up to the highest seat on the medical breakthrough bandwagon.

Well, we shall see who is correct, won't we?
