Simon Kenton/Covington Catholic (Scrimmage) Updates

A couple thoughts on this last night:

1. Preston Agee, more of that dude please. I thought he was clearly the best athlete on the field for us and certainly helps the team speed on both sides of the ball. With him in there with Zion Mason and Garrett Benke we’re very, very good at receiver.

2. We’re good on both sides of the line of scrimmage too. We’re pretty big and were pushing them around. It’s going to be tough sledding trying to run the ball in between the tackles against us with Jones and Sullivan at inside LB.

3. Even with really good receivers, I’m still skeptical about the passing game against better teams. Holtz is a very good athlete and this team is going to win a lot of games with him, but he’s not scaring anyone with his arm.

4. Zion, Trevor Wilson and Benke were all out last night. We’re going to need them ready to go if we want to win next week and I think we have a chance.

5. Owen Leen at RB really popped to me. Good acceleration and vision and he finishes runs like it’s personal.

Really hard to gauge anything as I'm not sure what SK has this year. CovCath looked quicker to my eyes, but maybe a little smaller than last year. But that was with out Wilson out there, who will help on the d-line. The junior class has been waiting their turn, but look to be a solid group.

I agree with this statement. I think all the RB's or any WR's that sweep around to get hand off all looked pretty tiny. Not to pick on the kids but Hummel, Lenihan, Leen, Collins all looked small. I know Mason is small too. But as long as they are fast and can escape tackles. I like our offensive line so they may be able to break free consistently. CCH always has smaller running backs. Casey McGinnis was strong but smaller in stature but no one could tackle him so he was CCH's greatest RB.

I know CCHFC likes Agee a lot but I only got to see 5 minutes of him in 2nd quarter. Wish I could have seen more in another half of play. I thought Holtz was fine at QB. Looked to be a great leader on the offensive side but if he is going to play defense then there is a lot of risk involved with getting inured so maybe Agee should be the starter. I guess I will let Coach Eviston make the tough decision.

As far as Simon Kenton, they looked absolutely awful in all areas. So I agree with colonel-fan on that one, it is really hard to gauge anything when you play a bad team. Next week will be direct opposite with Elder. I hope playing at the Pit don't intimidate the colonel kids too much and they can start strong. Should be interesting since its the first game of the year. Probably the best time to play a team like Elder who could also be rusty on their first game under the lights.

To be nice, I wasn’t impressed with SK.  Wilson will obviously help not only on the DL, but when he’s at TE, it’s like playing with 6 OL and he may be our best run blocker. I hope he got after it this off-season because he has a chance to be a real game changer if he did.
