Notre Dame Academy 65 Cov Holy Cross 35

From the KHSAA scoreboard.

Notre Dame 65 at Holy Cross (Covington) 35

I attended the CovCath vs. Cin St. X game as I thought that NDA would beat Cov Holy Cross rather easily, but I never in my wildest dreams thought that NDA would have beaten Cov Holy Cross by 30 on Cov Holy Cross home floor. This was a 35th District basketball game, so it was a huge win....

Anybody attend the game? Details?

Why wouldn't you think NDA would win by such a margin? NDA is probably the best team in the region right now. NDA has HC outwomened on paper at every position.

3ptshooter..... As you say "on PAPER".....Lets just say, that I have saw last years NDA vs Cov Holy Cross 35th District Championship game where NDA was up a ton, and blew it.... Cov Holy Cross is a team that for whatever reason, no matter who they have playing, will always be tough for NDA. Now understand, I wasn't surprised by the "W," but by 30? That's a ton of points to beat anybody by, but especially a district rival on their home court.... Great game Pandas........ One game at a time, one win at a time, and getting better, every time.

She is playing and giving it 110%. No quit in this girl or any other HC kids. They are all young and should be strong in the next few years. The game was over after one quarter but they all played hard until the final buzzer. Plus the crowd cheered each and every basket they made. Good loyal fans at HC for sure.

With her high-arcing 3-point stroke, Notre Dame sophomore guard Casey Jackson could not miss in the first period. Leading her team with three 3-point field goals on a 20-0 run to start the game, Jackson and her fellow Pandas, who are No. 1 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, cruised to a 65-35 victory over Holy Cross Saturday.

Despite this offensive firepower, Notre Dame coach Cheryl Darpel attributed her team's fast start to its defensive pressure.

"We are just tying to get better every game," Darpel said. "We had a defensive goal of keeping them under 40 points, and that is what they focused on when they came out."

Jackson finished with 11 points and senior center Emily Drees added 12 points for the Pandas, who forced 32 Indians turnovers.

"Our first eight girls play well defensively in their right spots," Darpel said. "They are probably the most athletic group I have had."

Darpel added that the Pandas' previous two games, against Ohio competition with victories over Seton and Ursuline, helped her team adapt to a more physical game. "We always have those teams on our schedule, and they are very physical," she said. "That's probably one of the biggest benefits we get is having to match their physical play."

Senior forward Nicole Dickman scored 11 points for the Pandas, who have seen increased production from their guards this season. "In the guard spots, we are very young and they are doing a great job so far," Darpel said. "This year we are trying to get more outside perimeter play."

Sophomore forward Stephanie Howard led the way for Holy Cross, which was unable to recover from a seven-minute scoring drought to start the game.

The Pandas' size in seniors Drees and Dickman also proved a deciding factor against the Indians squad. "We put a lot of focus in getting the ball to them," Darpel said of her dual threats inside. We are doing a good job of getting inside and outside play. Last year everyone was focusing on Nicole and Drees, and this year they can't do that."

Notre Dame (6-0) - Jackson 4 0 11, Tierney 2 0 5, Albanese 1 0 2, Delph 2 1 6, Smith 1 0 2, Johnson 3 1 7, Drees 6 0 12, Barnes 1 1 3, Dickman 4 2 11, Coleman 2 2 6. Totals: 26 7 65.

Holy Cross (1-5) - Lantry 1 4 6, Pemberton 1 0 2, Bibbins 1 1 3, Flesch 2 2 6, Howard 2 4 8, Noll 3 2 8, Buckingham 1 0 2. Totals: 11 13 35

HC is young and inexperienced. This was a "no doubt" contest before it ever started.

It looks like the first of possibly three Boone Vs. NDA match-ups for this season could occur next week sometime. Does anybondy know if this would be on Saturday?

A sidenote....I ran into a group of NDA players after the game catching a bite to eat and asked them how they did etc; they presented a very positive impression. Just a very classy, mature, and politely confident bunch...and apparently they can play the game!! Kinda seemed like a coach's dream team...good luck ladies!

If they both go undefeated on Wed/Thurs/Fri they would square off at 8pm on Sat at Boone for the championship!
