Trey James opts out of his senior season at Martin County HS, will join Iona

Big news from Martin County that will shake up the 15th region this season.

He's leaving school?   Or "opting out" of playing basketball his senior season?

Leaving School, he will be eligible to play at Iona in a few weeks.

Good for him. Sounds like he qualified for early graduation.

We had this discussion elsewhere on BGP earlier ....  leaving school early...   I guess it all depends on what you want out of basketball and your expectations of your future in it.

I guess he gains a semester of collegiate practice....not sure he gets much playing time on a 6-2 team with 4 seniors, 2 juniors, 4 sophomores and 6 other hungry freshmen, but wondering more what he loses.   I don't think it's a trade I would have wanted to make if I were in his shoes, but that's just me, I guess.   I know Martin County was pretty good last year - I'm not from that region - but aren't they considered one of the contenders this year for the region?     I wouldn't have wanted to trade my one chance at playing in the Sweet 16.    There are just some things that can't be replaced and some experiences that are priceless.  IMO.

Among the Gaels' current roster is 6'4" freshman forward Jordan Brooks from East Carter HS in KY.

Good luck to the young man!   I hope he has a fantastic college career, and we'll all be watching to see how another KY kid does in the "big leagues"!!

With the way the COVID rules are this year in the NCAA, his semester with Iona is probably not going to hurt his eligibility for another 4 years of play.

You may be correct, assuming they treat basketball like they did football, and I see no reason why they wouldn't.

Yes. All fall and winter NCAA and NAIA athletes aren’t charged any eligibility this year.

Both of the big men are out for the season at Iona so it's something he couldn't pass up.
