Class 3A

Throughout the course of this Covid affected season, football schedules published one day are trash the next. The marquee game of the previous weekend should have been DeSales vs. Christian Academy-Louisville, a rivalry game between two Top Ten teams in Class 3A. It didn't happen. Instead, a midweek Covid restriction led to DeSales making a counter-reformation, dropping Protestant CAL for Catholic St. Xavier. The result was a three touchdown victory for St. Xavier.

While DeSales was losing on short notice, Belfry was battling a different 6A power on long travel. North Hardin made the long trip to the mountains and came away victorious after a late fourth quarter drive, beating the home-standing Pirates, 21-20. It was a loss, but it was perhaps the best performance of the season thus far for Belfry.

Because of the unique opponent situation both schools faced, DeSales and Belfry remain 1-2 in the BluegrassPreps.com Class 3A rankings. The remainder of the Top Ten stayed the same with the exception of Paducah Tilghman, who falls out of the rankings after yet another loss to Mayfield. The youthful Blue Tornado struggled offensively, losing 36-6. They are replaced by Bell County, 27-0 victors over Garrard County. Bell isn't the quality of last season, but they still run the ball effectively behind a big offensive line.

The highlight game of October 16 features third-ranked Russell at fourth-ranked Ashland. Both clubs are undefeated, and while the winner all but locks up the top seed in the district, you can almost guarantee a second meeting in round two of the playoffs.

Other games of note include second-ranked Belfry traveling to undefeated Lawrence County. The Bulldogs have long been a thorn in the side of Belfry, although Lawrence hasn't beaten the Pirates since 2002. Fifth-ranked Elizabethtown travels to Larue County to meet the Hawks in a key District 3 matchup. Always explosive E-town is averaging 44 points per game, but it is the defense that is winning ballgames, allowing a mere 6.6 points per game. One final pivotal district showdown pits two clubs just outside the top ten - Glasgow at Taylor County - with the winner taking a firm grasp on the one-seed in the postseason.

1. DeSales at Western Hills

2. Belfry at Lawrence County

3. Russell at #4 Ashland

4. Ashland vs. #3 Russell

5. Elizabethtown at Larue County

6. Bardstown at Thomas Nelson

7. Mercer County vs. Henry County

8. Christian Academy-Louisville at 4A Shelby County

9. Rockcastle County vs. McCreary Central

10. Bell County vs. Jackson County

Nice reference with the "counter reformation." On point.

I like Bardstown parked right about where they are. After losing 22 seniors to a region finals team, they are throttling everyone they play, as they should, but the competition has only been fair/lukewarm. The obvious big game for them is next week against E-Town.

To say their competition has been fair is being nice.

I think Belfry takes it again. Moving Dixon to FB was the move that seems was needed. The fullback and that mesh point hitting is what makes that offense thrive and sets everyone else up. Reminds me of Johnson moving Devin Johnson to FB last year towards the end of the year.
