Covington Catholic played in the 40th installment of their rivalry against Beechwood this season, and now this Friday they will play in the 40th installment of their rivalry against Boone County. The argument could actually be made that Boone County is Cov Cath's oldest rival, as one of only two teams (along with Newport) that were willing to play Cov Cath in the Colonels' first football season in 1967. Highlands and Newport Catholic would follow suit and agree to games the following season.

There have been a couple of breaks in Rebels vs. Colonels series, with no games played from 1969-1973, 1986, 2007-2008, and the most recent break going from 2015-2018. It was renewed in 2019 when Boone County moved from 6A to 5A, stepping the Rebels back down from the largest class size for the first time since the KHSAA's move to 4 classes in 1975.

Currently the Rebels are 1-2 with an overtime win against Scott the week before last, and the Colonels are 3-0. The record between the two schools stands at 27-12 in Covington Catholic's favor.

Who wins this one? Or...maybe the more interesting question to ask here is, looking at the current state of affairs for each of these football programs, what will it take for either of them to come away from the game with positives? Covington Catholic hasn't yet gotten the team to the point where they are playing 4 solid quarters of football, and particularly still needs to find their stride on the offensive line and in the defensive backfield. Boone County is still in full program re-build mode under coach Bryson Warner, and this game is one of multiple instances of teams on their annual district schedule that don't make life any easier on them in any way.

I remember when this used to be played as the first game of the season and was highly anticipated. The 87 game was a one point win for the Rebels and both teams advanced to their division state championship game in 3A and 4A.

In this matchup, CovCath needs to continue to clean up the little things. I would continue to work on inside run plays and the timing of the passes out to the flats.

Boone needs try to establish the run and limit big plays.

Covington Catholic should use this game to work on any weaknesses.

Boone County needs to survive.

I assume the game may be on Facebook Live, I will make sure I check and post the link if I see it.

1st half running clock.

I'll continue to harp on it, but getting the passing game up and going is going to be the biggest key to making another run and being able to beat good teams later in the schedule. Without a real summer/camp hopefully Caleb and the receivers can continue to get the timing and execution down since that will determine if they repeat as 5A champs or not.

I agree, CCH has a long way to go to repeat as 5A champs.

Does anybody know if Boone streams their home games?

Not as far as I know of. It doesn't appear that the school district is doing much, if anythng, to assist on that front. Ryle has been working on getting a livestream to work (I believe it's just some coaching staff members or possibly parents giving it a try...with some technical difficulties), and Ryle was able to live stream part of the game at Boone County on Sept 11th.

I know for sure that Covington Catholic will have an audio broadcast of the game from the Colonel Athletic Network.

Colonels lost one of their top Receivers for the year this week: Shields.

Damn....I really really hate hearing that.  That's our second WR/DB to go down in their senior year. We lost Jackson Hodge for the year thanks to a knee injury in the Beechwood game.

My understanding is that sophomore WR/DB Zion Mason had a knee injury early last week - not sure on his status and whether or not he is expected to come back once he is eligible to play in the playoffs.

Assuming Coach Warner is doing the same thing tonight, I'll post a link to the livestream once it's started.

Not if I beat you to it. ?
