Stan Steidel killed in auto collision

Featured Replies

I didn't realize it was an auto accident. Where did it occur?

Where to start here. High school sports in NKY would not be the same without Stan and what he has done. I remember playing in I believe the 3rd All "A" at Ludlow with a recently expanded 16 team format. To take that tournament and expand it to both boys and girls, most sports, art competition, academics, cheerleading and giving scholarships, really requires more than a tip of the hat.

Stan was instrumental in taking the 9th region basketball tournaments and evening the playing field with other regions by moving the tournament to BB&T Arena at NKU. Although you lose the feel of a packed gym with everything on the line, Stan wanted to give our players the ability to play on a college floor to prepare for the state tournament. Speaking about the state tournament, NKU hosting the Girls Sweet 16 for 3 years does not happen without him as well.

A great coach, AD and friend to all of NKY and all of the small schools throughout the Commonwealth. So many kids have benefited directly or indirectly by his accomplishments and work. If you look at my avatar, I don't sit there at BB&T without Stan Steidel. Rest in peace Stan.

Someone sent me the following:

Visitation will be Sunday from 12-4 pm at Stan Steidel Court in Dayton High School’s gymnasium with a memorial service following at 4 pm.

In my opinion, Stan was the most influential person in high school sports in our lifetime. What he did with the All A Classic is incredible. Transforming a small boys basketball tournament into a state wide, multi-sport event. The scholarships, the sponsorships, it was all Stan's vision. Rest easy Coach, and thank you.

I never got to meet Mr. Steidel. But - based on the testimonials all offered here, I'd like to toss out something I read and memorized recently. I'm told it derived from an old Cherokee saying:

"When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced.

Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice."

Sounds like "mission accomplished" for this man. RIP.
