Armwrestling

Just wondering if anyone else has picked up on what you used to do at your kitchen table that is now making a it's way to notoriety.

I started in it at 16 years old and have enjoyed it since. Not all that long ago, even your National and World champions were lucky to break even after the expenses of going to a tournament.

Of course everyone remembers "Over the Top" from 1987, however it's only been in the last 10 years or so that it's become much more than anyone thought.

"Game of Arms" debuted on AMC and investors finally came along and formed leagues and now there is significant money to be won. It's worldwide now and there are millions of followers.

Social media no doubt influenced it all and took what once was not given a second thought to a high level and it's growing rapidly.

If you've ever seen some of these guys on t.v. and thought, "Hey, I could beat him", trust me, you definitely can't. They are just like professionals in anything else, they are insane at what they do.

I've had the opportunity to go against some of the best and know some of them.

They are incredible athletes and the training routines specific to what they do are crazy.

Even if you haven't been able to check any of it out, most of you no doubt have participated in a match at some point.

Thanks for sharing @TilghmanPride

I have some local arm wrestlers that work out at my gym.

These guys are so personable and they amaze me with what they do with dumbbells and how they adapt lifting techniques aimed at their profession.

And I agree TP, no you can't beat them and it isn't even close.

If I don't know them, I'm sure I know who they are. Most of us who keep up with it know guys from everywhere, but especially keep up with guys at the state level and surrounding areas.

Speaking about how personable they are was another point I thought about putting. I'm glad you mentioned it. It's all business at go time, but away from the armwrestling table, most are some of the best people you could meet.

They are all in this video, including the big dude with the glasses that starts the promo out. The other two are brothers.

Great minds and great people!

I've competed in a tournament with all these guys. Some serious power right there. Your gym may need more weights!

The guy on the left 40 seconds in held the Guiness World Record for ripping phone books in half a few years back. That's another hobby I picked up along the way.

They workout at the end of the rack if you know what I mean.

That guy (at 40 seconds) is the one guy that stood out to me in that video, I think it was his confidence.

So if I am following along we learned tonight that @TilghmanPride rips telephone books in half? :scared:

Yes sir! Although I will say that it isn't as hard as most people think. It took a few days of practice and there is technique involved that helps.

When you do it in a crowd, no one can ever tell the difference though.

A question for you. There’s this guy named Parker that frequents this site. Any chance you can do something about him?

I live close to a wide spot in the road called Decatur, Ohio. For decades, there’s been a sign at the city limits that says something like “Home of Sam Cooper, World Arm Wrestling Champion”.

Not a chance! That's on a different level.

Sam was in the era before I got into it big time. He was in the Masters division in the 90's and competed against some all-time greats.

I'm very impressed that they have a sign, most especially for that long.

I don't care what technique is involved, that's pretty impressive. Are your hands pretty big?

Out of curiosity, I had to go see what an average hand length for a male was. Looks to be 7.44" is a popular number used from wrist to fingertip.

My hand is 8" even. The bigger your hand, the easier it is to do.

Travis Bagent was at this year's Hillbilly Days in Pikeville. He was talking on all challengers. If you could beat him, you got $20,000. He didn't break a sweat with any of the challengers. It's obvious he was on a whole different level. I'll put the video link below.
