Ashland stumbled a little bit last week and look to recover from that It will not be an easy task as Ohio Division V #2 Ironton comes to town. The two share a common opponent in this young season in Wheelersburg, OH. Wheelersburg beat Ashland last week in Overtime. In the first week, Ironton beat Wheelersburg 30-6. Look for a very physical game. Who wins?

I like Ashland's chances better at home as opposed to at Ironton, but still think the Fighting Tigers are a little too much.

The HUDL on Ironton is impressive. I like them in this one.

Ashland's done a great job of turning this series around over the past decade, but Ironton's trending back up under Trevon Pendleton. The Fighting Tigers are very physical and have played lights out on defense so far. Being such a big rivalry game, this could easily go either way.

 

The key to slowing down Ashland is containing Hester and Pittman. So much of their offense runs through those two. If they see some daylight, it's six. Wheelersburg did a good job not getting gashed by them last week, which makes me think Ironton can/will do the same.

 

Offensively, Ironton is more methodical. They're kind of like a slow dripping tap that lulls you to sleep and then BAM!, Carrico breaks one, or the QB goes play action over the top to an open receiver because you've stacked the box or your corners get caught peeking in the backfield.

 

A great, competitive game should be expected. Ashland beat Ironton a combined 103-3 from 2015-2017 before last year's 14-7 Tomcat win. Ironton made huge strides in Pendleton's first year and were right there from start to finish against Ashland. With the continued strides they've made this season, I think they take this one at Putnam by a couple of scores.

 

Side note: Ironton's Reid Carrico committed to Ohio State earlier this week. He'll play linebacker at the next level, but he's a high impact player on both sides of the ball for the Fighting Tigers.
