BravesFan
I dont know if anybody follows 16th region baseball but I think there could be some surprisingly good talent come out of this region from teams like East Carter, Rowan, Raceland, Greenup, and maybe even Fairview. There wont be a dominant team next year but anybody could step up to win and maybe even make some noise at the state level. I cant wait until March. Anybody have any comments? MVP_007
The Raceland Rams return 3 of their top pitchers from last years regional runnner-up team. Lefty Scott Grizzle, and right handers Blake Morris and Matt Phillips. They also have alot of young talen returning, including SS Peyton Martin who batted over .400 last year and will most likely be taking over the lead off spot for the Rams now that Tolliver is gone. bobbyearl
Anything can happen in a 1 game shootout, and i dont if reign is the right word. But boyd would have to be the favorite this year as they most of the time are. They return 7 seniors with 5 of them playing major roles in the last 2 state tournament teams. Pitchers they return 5 of top 6, about all that is up for grabs on this team is 1st base and 2 outfield spots. While boyd lost a lot of talent last year there is usually a lot on the bench waiting their turn.
16th62nd
Boyd has a very talented senior class. They have to be the favorite. After this senior class is gone, the classes below don't look quite as talented for the next few years.

True, but did anybody ever wonder why boyd will have a average football & basketball team and take those same kids year in and year out and make a state tournament run in baseball. Boyd wins all of those regions between june and jan. They simply outwork every other team, this also explains why the 2 other sports are sometimes down a little their kids play baseball 9 months a year. This is why even in a somewhat down year talent wise ,you still have to worry about how much, a good kid you have never heard about improves from one year to the next. Then they will take a couple of good athletes and plug a hole or 2. (Zack Wilson & Ryan Crisp) for example, look for these 2 to have breakout years in baseball.

Rams will be strong on the mound. But hitting WILL be a concern. Martin did NOT hit over .400 last season. Morris is Raceland's best returning hitter. Raceland graduated their top 3 hitters ( Tolliver,Darby, and Miller).

They don't play other sports. Football takes 15-20 solid kids to really succeed. Basketball takes about 7 kids and Baseball takes about 3 strong pitchers and 4 or 5 good hitters. It's no secret that Boyd puts more emphasis on Baseball and encourage their kids to "only" play baseball. There will always be 2 or 3 kids on the baseball team that play another sport but that's about it. So I don't think it's fair to compare the schools success in Football and Basketball to their success in Baseball. It's not a level ground for comparison. When I was at Boyd, during the Jody Hamilton era, most of the baseball players dedicated themselves to nothing but baseball everyday of the year and had been doing so since their freshman year if not earlier. Many of the baseball players when I played could have started in basketball and football also and would have had a wonderful effect on the other programs but chose not to so they could concentrate on baseball. Out of Boyds top 10 or 12 players only 2 or 3 play baseball only. They start tryouts on Feb.15 and play their last fall game on or around Oct.15 each year, while playing all summer. If you play football then you obviously cant play during the summer or fall, but where does this leave time to work on basketball or other sports. The day of the 2 or 3 sport athlete is slowly going away. The commitment they have to make to 1 sport wont allow it.

They are in high school for four years. They should be allowed and "encouraged" to play everything. Some kids at Boyd don't play football because they are "encouraged" to play fall baseball. Basketball season interferes with their batting cage time, etc.. Boyd has always had a problem "encouraging" their kids to "only" play baseball. It's not fair to the other sports and to the kids. Many of these kids graduate and years later sit around "wishing" they had played another sport like football, basketball, or even soccer. You can't tell me this is not true because I hear it all of the time. Every now and then at Boyd you will have a Fugeman, Jake Hughes, Sargent or Hunter type kid that play multiple sports, but they are frowned upon for missing fall baseball and other things. High school kids are exactly that, KIDS. They should be allowed to play it all if they want to. Not discouraged from playing other sports. Which happens daily at Boyd. MBWC41
I still say Caleb Stewart (former boyd baseball player) would have broke every record in the book at a running back or wide reciever position at Boyd. His speed was unreal for his size.
3high
I still say Caleb Stewart (former boyd baseball player) would have broke every record in the book at a running back or wide reciever position at Boyd. His speed was unreal for his size. I have heard him and Chris Fritz both say they wished they would have played football. Both went to college for baseball, which was a result of the hard work they did in the off-season for baseball, but think how much both of these kids would have helped the football team during their days at BCHS. I think both of them were talented enough to have missed fall baseball and played football and still get a scholarship for baseball. They were "ATHLETES" and should have been encouraged to play all "3" sports at Boyd. If Boyd Co. would encourage more of their "ATHLETES" to play all sports, then "ALL" of the teams there would experience more success. It basically comes down to Coaches being selfish and looking out for only themselves. One thing the coaches forget, All the coaches at Boyd wear the same name across their chest. They "SHOULD" want to succeed in everything and help each other out. It's about the "SCHOOL" not personal agenda's and awards.:ylsuper:
CountyPride
I disagree that Boyd tries to influence the Top Baseball players to only play Baseball. That is bogus. Some of the best Baseball players are playing and was playing other sports. The main reason why some only do Baseball is that ANY sport in High School now takes more time then its alloted season and if you was to really truely want to key in on one sport and was good enough to play any sport, then Baseball at Boyd is probably your best option to succeed. Let me give you a couple of examples: Football - Poor Youth Program Mild Junior High Program Decent High School Program(No School District Help, poor facilities) Basketball - Decent Elementary School Programs(No where to practice) Terrible Middle School feeder programs(No where to practice) Decent High School program...getting a little bit better. Baseball - Questionable Little Leagues in Area with decent facilities Great Youth Traveling team options with good facilites. Good Babe Ruth Program still with good traveling team options Great JV teams Great High School Program, with great support and great facilities. So with that you see where the most emphasis is, whether young or old.
