Correct but that is a more recent rule change. Until recently that was not the case. I’ve also had officials not ask how we wanted to handle situations.

 

I think that is a big problem with that one, too many officials assume what the coach wants in that situation. Now obviously in a one possession game the team behind wants the clock stopped, but sometimes it's not so clear.

I’ve had guys just start marking things off without asking anyone what we wanted to do.

Let’s say a team was playing MoCo this year with the Davis kid. He is 6’4” and can run. MoCo opponent loads the box to stop the wing-t. MoCo starts throwing the ball to Davis but the DBs are mugging the crap out of him to the point you could call DPI every time. The sideline gets warned they need to tell the kid to lay-off that he can’t do that all game. The sideline refuses to adjust and confined to tell the DB to mug him. I can see it thrown then.

 

Now that’s an extreme example but I could see that being a time it gets thrown.

I would just keep calling DPI, they are still going to score eventually. If a team is committing it intentionally, they obviously aren't worried about the yardage anyway.

It comes down to slowing down the game. That and it’s only DPI if the ball is in the air. I’ve seen QBs freak and hold the ball in those cases. They then get blasted. Of course it’s a judgement call by the crew but that was one case I could see it being called.

Had no idea this was a standing rule but I like it.

 

Talking heads love to say, "Smart play as he was beat. Why cost your team points if you can only cost them 15 yards", but to me intentional PI's are an injury risk.

 

If a WR has separation and is focused on a football and a defender pulls them down from behind or purposely trips them up you are asking for injury. Subsequently, in the unlikely event that an Offensive Player deliberately interferes on an under thrown ball or a pick it can have a similar risk for an unsuspecting defender.

 

I think 30 yards is harsh. Especially if it is an Offensive PI or a Defensive PI on an intermediate pass.

 

I personally would make it a 25-yard penalty.

The only time I could see it being warranted would be the examples I gave above.

 

Defender gets toasted on a double move or a fly pattern and tackles the receiver to avoid a Touchdown.

 

Offensive player either tackles a defender to prevent an INT on a mis-thrown ball or uses a Pick play to blatantly earhole an unsuspecting defender.

 

I think in all three of these instances a penalty more extreme than 15 yards would be warranted.

 

I also think Offensive PI should come with a loss of down along with a penalty as well.

Then I would call defensive holding.

They should, do and will call it as holding. I wasn’t using that example as when to enforce an extra 15. What I meant was that if DBs are holding and grabbing the whole game it gets to the point of influencing a call of later on giving the extra 15. They aren’t going to throw a flag every play even if they could. It gets to the point the officials will do something to help maintain control of the game.
