Open Job: Boyd County

Featured Replies

Per Aaron Snyder of the ADI paper.

Boyd County elected to not renew David Manning's Contract. He was the head coach for 2 seasons.

Manning will remain a special education teacher at the high school.

Since their best days under Tom Scott back in the 60's and 70's, they've had a revolving door of coaches come and go every few years. Whoever the new coach is, he'll be Boyd's (I think) 15th different coach in the last 40 years or so. It's hard to build anything that way.

Football is squarely behind basketball, baseball, and soccer on the pecking order of boy's athletics at Boyd County. You could maybe even throw track & field in there, as well.

Who might be some of the candidates to take over?

I think it will take someone who really wants to be a head coach bad. It is not a good situation at all. It is hard to win especially in football when it is probably only the 4th or 5th sport at the school as @DevilMayCare so very corrected stated above.

The positive is that they at least have a shot to win their district the next four years. That goes a long way in building a program.

The negative is that this program has been a revolving door dumpster fire for most coaches, and in being that they still let a guy go after two years.

There was a really good article that talked about PJ Fleck, Minnesota, and how important continuity is in a program. It compared Minnesota, Iowa, & Wisconsin and how similar their programs were a long time ago. Fry @ Iowa, Alvarez @ Wisconsin, changed that for their schools. The revolving door at Minnesota kept their program struggling. Fleck wants to be the guy to provide that continuity. He was a home run hire.

Since coming to Mercer, I've really begun to appreciate continuity. There are many advantages to holding on to the same coach for an extended period. The community & kids learn what to expect. The kids learn one system from the ground up. You aren't buying complete sets of new uniforms every year.... etc.

I hope Boyd County can get a solid coach and keep him. If a school system has a good coach, the best bet for long term success is to support him, get him good assistants and try to keep him. Constantly starting over is very tough.

Good luck to the Lions!
