Class 5A

 

Two teams have seemingly cleared the pack entering the playoffs in South Warren and Covington Catholic. Both of these undefeated heavyweights took care of business to complete the end of the season. South Warren left little doubt pounding a Top 5 Class 2A team, and Covington Catholic handled their duties in shutout fashion over a stout 6A Campbell County team. Anderson County wrapped up a perfect 10-0 record and will be rewarded with a first round bye. Bowling Green is still one of the teams most will pencil in for a potential deep playoff push. The Purples, though, may draw the most difficult opening game as they host Christian County. The Colonels’ record leaves a lot to be desired, but their defense has been consistent and these two programs are very familiar with each other. Pulaski County has gotten hot, but the Maroons almost stumbled against one-win 4A Collins and will need to stay focused on task as Whitley County has enough to make their game interesting.

The Purples will roll over Christian County. Owensboro could be a tough game, but Bowling Green played terrible in their first meeting. If BG plays well they may have an easier time against the Red Devils. But one thing is for sure Owensboro will play hard so you have to be ready.

 

I expect BG and South Warren to faceoff in another shown down. Between the refs and the weather in the first game, it's hard to say who will win that one. If BG doesn't fix it's OL issues then it is pretty clear who will win. But I am confident that neither team will beat Covington Catholic. In fact Catholic could probably handle either of these teams by a couple of scores at least. The 5A title is Covington Catholic's to lose.

It's all in good fun. CCH has deserved top spot for the last two years. It should stay that way until someone knocks them off that spot.

The refs couldn’t have saved them, no. But the refs did kill most if not all of the momentum that BG had. Either way they lost the game and that’s that. Hopefully there will be a rematch.

I don't know that Bowling Green played that bad the first time they played the Devils and on that note, Owensboro did not play mistake free football either. You make it sound like Owensboro played as well as they could and still lost to a team that wasn't at its' best. They both made mistakes. But I'll say this, the defense BG played against last time isn't the defense they'll see this time and if Owensboro's coaches look, they'll find out that they do possess a fairly potent running game. If that happens, Bowling Green will see an Owensboro team that they've never seen (When was the last time Owensboro averaged 32 passing attempts per game in a season? Never?). Then again, BG can rise to the occasion and pull this one out. IMO it will be one of the better second round games played this year.
