Feeder Programs

Featured Replies

Who is it up to, to begin a feeder program?

Is it up to a city/county, School system, could it be done by one person?

I'd say it takes a lot more than one person, but I really don't know the specifics.

It sure will be interesting to see how many people rush to place their kids in different programs next year if this really goes into effect.

I think this thread concerns youth football programs. Most successful programs have good youth programs. I would think the head coach would want a good youth program, if only to make his varsity program better (at a later date ofcourse). I know Lexington Catholic starts their youth programs early with kids playing flag, then at around grade 5 they play 8 man tackle and then on to the middle school team.

If the head coach doesn't get involved in the start up, he's nuts. Its more than just having a youth league, its making sure its ran the right way. It should be designed to prepare the kids for high school ball, not satisfying the egos of the youth football coaches.

At Corbin the Coach Jewell is very involved along with volunteers that care about kids and the future of Corbin football. The citys recreation department is a huge part of it also. Anyone who wnats to try and start one has to realize there is alot of countless hours involved, not just during season but in the off season. Cleaning, counting, recertifing, and repairing equipment takes time. K-2 there is flag football, 3-4 there is full contact football, then there is another group of tackle football for 5-6.

I think that it is impairitive to have a youth football league to support the local high school team ran the correct way. The problem is is that it's getting harder and harder to find good coaches that have the right attitude about the developement of the kid's. At this level (3rd grade - 7th grade) it can never be about winning and losing and to often it becomes just that. Their are to many kid's standing on the sidlines or not playing at all because coaches get caught up in wanting to win the game and the kid or kids are not good enough yet. The other problem is is that they schedule to play teams from around the joining area's, subsiqently adding to the winning and losing additude. I think youth programs should look into the way highlands runs their youth league. They play against each other and develope the kids the right way, thus that is why they are so good every year. I know that their is alot more that goes into it, but that is a good start. [/color]
