Kentucky State Police investigating shooting involving Erlanger Police

So the state versus Erlanger since they turned it over to them?

I don't think "versus" is the right way to define it. Any police investigation should be right down the middle. I look at this as one professional organization investigating another professional organization.

I truly believe anytime they're is an officer involved in shooting someone, an outside department or organization should do the investigation.

Considering the size of most police departments in this area I agree. However, if it is a large department with dedicated Internal Affairs and units designed specifically to handle large incidents then I probably lean towards letting them investigate their own.

To me it has nothing to do with size of the department. It has to do with not being affiliated or knowing the officer or officers involved.

I can see both sides. Erlanger is one of the larger departments in the state. KSP, over the past few years has, for lack of better terms reached out and said they'd handle officer involved shootings or incidents that could become under scrutiny, for whatever reason. They have a team in place. That's what they do and they're good at it.

It makes sense to have an outside agency handle it. From what I have read, this seems to be more common on a national basis. Often times the departments will do their own lateral investigation as well.

To an extent we are saying the same thing.

Once a department gets to a certain size (at least 500, probably more) the department will have investigators that don't know the officers involved and their only affiliation will be they work at the same department.

However, public trust is so important that if the public wants a separate agency investigating such serious matters I am good with that too.

Not sure if this was previously mentioned or not. Kenton County commonwealth attorney Rob Sanders has charged Dexter Helton (the man shot by police) with Attempted Murder.
