Mark Story Article about Rich Brooks

It was a mistake and a bad one when Curry took the redshirt off Watts and Haley. I don't know that it makes him a bad guy as Story hints at but it was a poor decision.

I also agree that this was a poor decision. I think most any 18 or 19year old kid would do the same thing. Most react before they think of the consequences. These kids want to play regardless of the situation and therefore should have never had the option IMO.

I understand, but I think it was a mistake to even give them the option. Just my opinion. Once again I don't think it makes Curry a bad guy just a poor program builder.

I agree. I think in that situation Curry should have used better judgement and not even explored that option. I'd say 95% of redshirted players would agree to play if given the chance. "Discussing" it with the families is almost like covering your tracks, IMO. It is a preemptive measure to deflect criticism regarding the decision. That way he can say, "I gave him the option and we discussed it with the family...".

Like you, I wouldn't use that one point to proclaim Bill Curry as a bad guy, but he dropped the ball on that one. And, I suspect he did it for the reason Story claims, a last gasp effort to save his job at the expense of a wasted year for the player(s) in question. Again, that doesn't make him a bad guy...just a guy who wanted to keep his job and was going to try and do just that.

About time something positive from the local media.

Since when does the local newspaper have an obligation to do public relations for the local university? Don't they have their own PR department?

That being said — and I've never met the man personally — every account I've heard about him indicates he is a fine, upstanding man, and definitely worthy of respect for how he carries himself, and that's something to be commended in the profession he's in. But that doesn't change my opinion that he's an awful coach, with the past results to support my opinion.

I agree, Curry was a good guy but just couldn't get it done.

Jim, I have always felt that Story was hypercritical of Brooks from day 1. I just wanted him to be fair and report the good with the bad. I feel that is what he has done here.

I can appreciate that. :thumb:
