March 26, 20188 yr Author What is his background? 5 things to know about Louisville athletics' Vince Tyra
March 26, 20188 yr What is his background? Deuce’s post will take care of a lot of it. In short: the son of UofL basketball legend Charlie Tyra, he was himself a collegiate baseball player, but at UK. Partner in a venture capital firm. Advised operations at ISCO Industries until recently. Minority investor in Louisville City FC. Former member of the UofL Foundation Board (but was not wrapped up in all the Ramsey mess). Has been the interim athletic direct since October. Most importantly, he’s a Trinity man and therefore diligent, capable, and trustworthy.

March 26, 20188 yr I did not know he was a Trinity guy. Yessir. Was a pitcher for the Shamrocks in the mid-80s before going to UK. Shoulder gave out before he could make a try at pitching in the minors. Seems like things turned out fine.
March 26, 20188 yr Author Good hire, Louisville folks? Yes, IMO. He has won a lot of people over in the six months he’s had the interim tag.
March 26, 20188 yr Author Honest question as I do not know, were there any other candidates? Search committee was hired to review candidates. Tyra has been the most publically discussed because of his proximity to Louisville in general.
March 26, 20188 yr Good hire, Louisville folks? I think so. He knows the university and cares about its success and also about its reputation. His dad was one of the early legends of the basketball program. Bringing Mack in shows at least competence and if, as is rumored, he locks Jeff awake in for an extension, then he’s doing the bulk of what could be asked of an AD at this level. Lost a few donors during all the recent mess. He’s a longtime local businessman that’s active in that community. I think he’s the right guy to bring them back and expand that circle.
March 26, 20188 yr I'll add that the people he brings on as his associates will be his success or failing. He'll need someone experienced in running a college athletic department at his side and someone experienced in fundraising is going to be an absolute necessity. He's done a nice treading water when presented with the opportunity. The board just took away the life jacket and told him to start swimming. We'll find out soon enough.
