Now, I'm hearing he has turned it down after completing the interview process and being hired by the BOE. I guess time will tell, more to follow.

How good is the Ironton job? I'm not really aware of the Ohio system but I know Ironton has typically been a good/great program. Can you win state titles? If you don't, do the people get upset? Is it a good place to live/teach?

Ironton was the crown jewel of the KY/OH/WV tri-state area from the early 70’s through the mid 90’s, when they drew talent from all over the area. But it's not what it once was. The decline has been gradual over the past 15 years or so. The talent pool has dwindled along with the economy and rival Wheelersburg has overtaken them as the premier program in southeastern Ohio. At this point, the appeal of Ironton is rooted mostly in tradition and nostalgia. I'm not saying it can't be a great job again, but there's a lot of work to be done and the Ohio football landscape is rugged and unforgiving. The right coach could get things rolling again, I believe. They need a coach that will bring with him a more modern offensive system. The old t-formation was nearly unstoppable during their best years under Bob Lutz, but it's been nearly 20 years since that was the case. They did start to incorporate the spread last year.

 

Wheelersburg, which is located about 20 miles down US 52 from Ironton, won the D5 state title last year in Ohio. So championships are still a realistic goal, I think.

 

Not sure about the teaching aspect. I want to say academics have never really been a strong point of Ironton schools.

Academics is why the Superintendent lost his job, just a few years ago the school system was awarded the Gold star for academics. The schools are all new and were built pretty high tech.

Ironton is currently 3rd in the State with 33 State Playoff appearances and holds the #1 spot for consecutive unbeaten games at 58 (77-83)

I'm not seeing anything in the last twenty years. That was the basis of my question - I'm well aware of their history but is this the same job as it was in 1999? Can they get back to the previous success?
