Bowling Green 67 Warren Central 65 (14th district championship)

Featured Replies

Purples overcome two separate 14 point deficits and a Warren Central school scoring record 48 points from Jordan Cousin to with the 14th district championship. Bowling Green gets their 2nd straight win over the dragons and their 5th straight 14th district title.

BG actually trailed by 15 at one point in the third quarter. They've shown a great ability to overcome large deficits, not just against Central, but did it in both their games. Their only lead was the final score. Led by 4 seconds in the game, and probably were only tied for the last minute (the only ties were 0-0 and 65-65). Central was 7/16 from the foul line. They had four one and one bonus situations between the two halves, and missed the front end of each. I really don't even have to go beyond that to explain why they lost. You literally can't have that type of situation, to not only miss the majority of your free throws but not even give yourselves a chance for extra points at the line.

As great as Cousin was, and it wasn't from selfishness, he simply did not get scoring assistance from anyone else. Central scored 23 in the second half - Cousin scored 20 of those. Bibb got two to give them their final points of the night (and missed the And-1 free throw opportunity after it), and Mee had a free throw in the half as well. Potter - zero. Hopefully he internalizes this in a good way and comes out again with a fire. You could not have ever convinced me that he would have that level of difficulty scoring. Especially after Wardlow - BG's best on-ball defender - rotated over to Cousin. Just an uncharacteristic game at a very, very bad time.

For their part Bowling Green continued to do what they do. They drive to the rim, they play smothering defense, they force turnovers on the press. You can tell that they never believe they're out of a game, and that can be infectious. Winning begets winning. I've said it multiple times in reference to Bowling Green and it remains true. Little things seem to bounce your way when you have it rolling, and BG keeps making those breaks and making the most of the opportunities. They had fantastic energy from their crowd, and they hit an avalanche of threes. 9/20 at one point (may have ended with that, I'm not sure). From guys that do not usually hit them. BG hasn't updated their last few games, but prior to that point, Jaylen Wardlow was 0/2 from three on the year. He hit three tonight. Isaiah Mason entered hitting 32.1% of his threes, hitting 17 on the year. I believe he hit 3 or 4. Open looks on most, and man, they knocked them down. It was a team effort, as Key only had five points. You have to tip your cap to them, they just keep it going. They are the favorite now for the region. As I mentioned back the last time they played, I do believe they'll play in the region finals as well. But they have the mental edge without a doubt, and that may be more than enough.

It has to creep into the minds of the Central players that’s Bowling Green may just have their number. Which is honestly surprising to me

Agree totally.

That was the #1 reason I wanted Central to win this game going in. I am very fearful of that. I still believe Central to be the better team - for sure the starting five. Bowling Green's depth is much better, which is a definite edge they have. But I do have a fear that these players believe when the chips are down that they can't get it done. Even though that is exactly what they did, on the road no less, in the first game. But given that they've now lost 12 of 14 to Bowling Green, and each of the last six postseason games, the doubts have to be progressing.

Central can beat Bowling Green in a region final. They may have that chance. But their best chance at winning would be if someone else would (for once) do the deed for them. It's only been 10 years since another team besides Warren Central eliminated them in the postseason before the state tournament. So, you know, not too much to ask.

Sounded like a war. Would have loved to have seen this game.

It was 10. 3/10 from field - all twos, 4/9 from the line. Which is like 4/12 since the missed front ends meant free throws he didn’t even get to shoot.

I called at the beginning of the year. BG players have been beating WC every since the 7th grade. I predicted it would be rocky but BG will win the district and be favored to win the Region. BG played a very tough schedule much tougher than WC. I think playing in the King of the Bluegrass helped prepare BG for a good post season run back to State. Remember BG is still 10 players deep with the lost of Tre Jones and Zion Harmon cause both of those kids could still be playing there.

I don’t see the surprise. Bowling Green is a talented BB team and used to winning.
