Corbin Attorney pledges $25,000 to improve school safety

His heart is certainly in the right place. Interesting topic.

Playing devils advocate here. Buying the metal detectors is one thing. The cost of hiring and training people to use them is another. Lastly, i have a friend who spent 40 years in education as both a teacher and later in administration. She said that metal detectors are not worth the expense. If kids want to get something around them, they will.

Have there been any studies done to measure the effectiveness of metal detectors vs the cost of having them? I would be interested in hearing the opinions of BGP teachers on this.

While I am a teacher and like the idea of metal detectors, @Bengal Maniac is a school safety expert.

Existing teachers and classified staff could be trained to run these. More assistance would be needed at the middle and high school buildings.

I like the idea that citizens are putting their money where their mouth is on this issue. Maybe it will motivate school boards, state, and federal govts to emphasize school safety.

IMHO there are some large corporations that need to be chipping in too.

Are we arming these trained teachers to run the metal detectors?

That's not what this thread is about. The quickest way to get this thread shut down (just like the last one on the Parkland school shooting) is to start up the gun debate again.

i am not sure if this is crossing the political line or not.

In December there was a shooting at University Hospital. An unarmed security guard (as per hospital policy) was shot as he was manning a metal detector. My guess is that littleluck was wondering who is going to protect the teachers running the metal detectors.

BTW, that very same metal detector at University Hospital is now being manned by armed Cincinnati Police Officers.

Schools are in such a tough spot keeping students and faculty safe. I too think the public and private sectors need to get involved and help schools all they can.

A local businessman in Somerset several years ago partnered with every school in the county (maybe McCreary County also) and installed a panic alarm system in all of the schools. He has also maintains the system equipment and has taken care of the monthly fee that comes with the service.

Somerset City Schools have had an SRO for well over 10 years, he covers the HS, MS, and Elem which are all very close.

Pulaski County Schools now have SROs in both High Schools and both Middle Schools for a total of 4 in the county school system.
