January 5, 20188 yr Food for thought. Hear me out and think about it. The albatross on the Bengals has been Mike Brown. He is set in his ways and very reluctant to change. The most success in the Mike Brown era has been with Marvin at the helm. Why is that? Because Marvin has been able to get Mike to make changes. The Bengals have more scouts and personnel department employees than they ever had before Marvin. Mike had a guy from Moeller high school running the personnel department. Marvin changed that. Now the Bengals are almost always graded out at B or higher on their drafts. I realize some of those draft picks have flopped recently, but the experts still graded the drafts highly on draft day. Despite the existing flawed characters still on the roster, Marvin has upgraded the character of this roster significantly in his time here. There has been much more professionalism on the team under Marvin than there was prior to his arrival. I think the flawed characters that are still here are here because of Mike, not Marvin. These are just a couple areas. The point I am making is Marvin is forcing change on Mike. Very, very slowly and incrementally - but change is happening. Is it possible the short comings in the playoffs and this year are Mike related issues? I believe Marvin's drama the past month was about wresting more control away from Mike. Paul Alexander has been on this staff since 1994 because of Mike, not Marvin. IMO Ken Zampese was made OC by Mike, not Marvin. Zampese becoming OC was vintage 1990's era Mike Brown. The offensive line roster flops over the past couple years - Mike issues, not Marvin. I don't think Marvin wanted to draft John Ross with the first pick. I think Mike pushed that. All these things and the decline of the team the past two years gave Marvin the leverage to finally say to Mike - if you want to win playoff games and have a shot at championship football, you need to get out of the way and let me run this the way I want to run it. Did Marvin finally get the albatross of Mike from around his neck and the team's neck with this last maneuver? If Mike is completely out of the decision making loop, shouldn't we be thanking Marvin?

Interesting points and certainly some improvements often noted in the "Marvin Era". For Bengals' fans, I hope you're correct. The fact remains he's a bad in game coach, that is legendary at mismanaging the clock & timeouts; and makes little if any, half time adjustments? Concerns for me would include comments like those made after the Vikings & Bears' games, when asked if he thought his team played flat or lacked effort; ole' Marv responds "Well it's not my job to get them to play hard, they're professionals"?? Can't imagine any great coach uttering anything like that?? On the bolded, if you think Mikey is "completely out of the decision making loop", give me a call & I've got some lush oceanfront property in Campbell County I'll sell you very reasonably?

I will buy some of this. I do think Marvin has some influence. The only player the last few years I shake my head at that they have kept is Adam Jones. Not for play, but off field. There have been other instances of players that all teams have, but not chronic like Jones. Burfict gets a bad rap at times because of his on field stupidity and that is deserved, however, there seems to be no off field stuff with him that I know of. I think the biggest besides Asst. coaches you mentioned, is paying all the very good players. Paid Leon Hall not JJ paid Boling not Zeitler and Whit. He will pay AJ's, AD's, Geno's, Dunlap's Burfict's... (at least one contract as he did with Whit, also). He has to, most of those guys do not get away from Mike. He doesn't replace losing the very good with the very good. They are horrible in Free Agency. Marvin seemed to address that with Mike Brown, let's see if that changes.
January 5, 20188 yr Told a friend the other day that if they would have replaced Marvin with a big-name I would have been more than OK with it. Was pretty certain that wasn’t happening. I said if they hired a relative no name or a coach not well thought of or more likely, from inside the organization, I think they would have gotten worse the next few years because Mike would’ve stayed way too involved. I think you make some great points
